As he died after 1855, have you viewed the death certificate on SP? Are the parents names not given?

Have a record of his Marriage and Death - but can't find his birth record - Aug 1771 Pathhead - David was 90 when he died in 1861. Haven't found any siblings. Also looked at Kircaldy, Dysart and Gallatown  ::)

If you manage to trace your Shiel/Shiels/Shield line back a bit further, you may find a connection to David Shiels and Margaret Macbeth who were married in 1655 at Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy. They had several children in Dysart, including Agnes Shiels who married John Martin in 1703 and Euphane Shiels who married George Martin in 1704, both marriages in Kinglassie. Two sisters marrying two brothers, I think.

I believe that George Martin and Euphane Shiels were my 6 x great-grandparents.

The Shiels (however you spell it) seem to have been a Dysart family, and I have a pencilled note in one of my old notebooks saying "For later Shields in Dysart see Fife Family History Society journal September 1997, p.4ff.
