Hate to disappoint you but in 1851, Sarah Hoskin was described as the Head of the household but also as a wife. She had James, mary and Josiah but plainly her husband, if she was actually married, was away from home. sarah was on King Street, Stoke Damerel.

You may have to get one of the childrens' birth certificates to find out who the father was.

Cheers,

Jen

OK

in 1861 she was described as a mason's widow, so her hubby might have spent quite a bit of time away with his job.

Thanks for your help.

FreeBMD has this marriage.

June 1844 Stoke Damerel/9/478
William Hoskin
Sarah Hockin

I wonder if they should both read Hoskin. Could they have been cousins?

Looking at deaths between when Philip was born in 1859 and the census of 1861 when Sarah was a widow there is a death for a Josiah Hoskin.

In 1843 there is a marriage for a Josiah Hoskin and Sarah Taylor.

So it could be a william or a Josiah. Can you find either of them in 1851 as free floating masons/builders/plasterers at all please ?

Thanks
