Bells of Durham
« on: Monday 01 September 08 11:16 BST (UK) »
Trying to find Fred Bell who was my great grandfather.  I know he died in 1979 in Durham where he lived.  I have his birth down as 1891 (18th OCT) .  I cant find him on the 1901 census and I cant find his marriage.  His wifes maiden name was Logan and he had a son called Henry in 1914 and a duaghter called avril around 1916.

I am stuck because I cant find him on a census.  There are a lot of Fred Bells!

Can anybody help?

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks for your help so far.  Just to update you I was mistaken with the maiden name Logan in the original post.  There where two Henry Bells 1914 - 1981 (durham).  Logan was the maiden name of the wrong Henry.

I know Henry was born on the 31st Jan 1914 from his death record.  Fred was his father and died in 1979.  I cannot find a birth record for Henry to establish the maiden name of his mother.

Any ideas.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi
When you say he lived in Durham - the county I assume and not the city - do you mean that you know he was born there?  Who was the informant on the death certificate?  What was his occupation?  When did Henry die?    Birth dates can be wrong on those occasions so you need to search a year or so either side.   I am sure you have more information - every scrap helps!   Avril is an unusual name at that time too.

Hi Andrea,

I dont have Henrys death certificate.  Just the online record for his death.  This indicates his birth as 31st Jan 1914.  My father has confirmed this as his birthday.  I dont know for sure whether he was born in county Durham but he married there and lived there until he died. He lived at Blackhill near Consett.  I know he married Margaret Howie and they had 6 children.

However it is Henrys mother and father I cannot find in the records.

His father was known as Fred Bell and I know nothing of his mother.  Fred died  in 1979 and I have found a birth record for 18/10/1891 which is probably him.  This is in the Durham North area.  I also have been told that Henry had a sister called Avril but I cannot find any info on her either.

I believe Fred served in the army as a cook.

That is everything I know.

Thanks,

Paul

Would it be worth looking for Henry's marriage certificate to see what his father's name and occupation are on that.  Witnesses might help too.
