Newbie problem
« on: Monday 01 September 08 00:55 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)

This is my first post here, and i've just recently started tracing my family tree. I started on my mother's side as i was lucky enough to have a great-aunt with lots of info and photo albums to get me started.
But, I would now really like to trace my father's side but unfortunately have no living relatives to ask for help. I do have some old things of my grandfather's, I'm no expert but think they are ID cards from during the war which give me his d.o.b but I have checked for birth registers but cant find anything, he was born in 1908 and lived in Liverpool and i'm pretty certain was born there too. I'm hoping to find his parents and then use the census from there.
I would really appreciate any help, also if anyone has any interest in the ID cards you might be able to tell a little bit more about them (just to add that little bit extra to my research  :))

Thanks (in advance),
Lorraine

Hi Lorraine.

You've come to the right place for help, but Im new too.

There is a section about the military and if you ask about your ID cards there, Im sure someone clever will help.

Hi Lorraine

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Could you tell us  your grandfather's name?  We might be able to do some wider searches.  Also do you know when he married. Getting that certificate would give his father's name.

Regards

Yes saw that, Suz.

I thought that maybe we could concentrate on BMD, census stuff here and the AF's would be best for the IDs etc.  Maybe you could put links to each thread  :-\

Don't give up, it can be done.  When I first started doing my father's side of the tree, all I had was an old photo of my grandfather and grandmother, and that was it.  I didn't even know what their names were.  Most of my early failures were due to the fact that I hadn't got a clue on what I was doing - although my father was born in 1898, I couldn't find his birth record, or find him on the 1901 census.  I didn't even know exactly where my father was born - only that it was the Islington area of N London.

Eventually, with the help of several Rootschatters, I made progress.  I couldn't find his birth record because I was looking in the wrong place.  Although he was born in November 1898, his birth wasn't registered until early 1899, and I hadn't realised that births were recorded under the date they were recorded, and not the birth date.  Eventually I found his birth entry - Southgate, 1st Quarter 1899, and from the certificate I got his father's name and his mother's maiden name.  I couldn't find my father in the 1901 census because he had been entered under his middle name, and not his first name.  All the information is there - you just have to find it, and that's part of the fun  :)
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Thanks guys, Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't sure where to post but i'll keep the BMD here and the rest over there :-)

Ok, his name's DANIEL EVANS born 16 Dec 1908 and married Ann on 14 April 1941 .  I'm not sure where he was born but am fairly certain he always lived in Liverpool.

Hope this helps, Lorraine

Hi Lorraine

If it was December, as Nick has said, he is likely to have been registered in 1909. There's one registered in Liverpool and one in Birkenhead in the first quarter of 1909.

Do you have Ann's maiden name?
