1861 Grimstone
« on: Friday 28 January 05 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I'd be grateful if someone could look up 1861 Census for Grimstone - looking for Alfred Bateson, aged 1 or 2, and his family.  Thank you. - Deborah

Hi Dimps,

Haven't found your Alfred I'm afraid. Are you sure of his birth date?? The only Bateson on the 1861 in Grimstone is this one

John Bateson  Head  37   Ag lab
Sarah    "          Wife  39
Thomas  "           Son  13  Ag Lab
Susanna   "         Dau  10
Emma        "        Dau   8
William       "        Son   6
Elizabeth   "         Dau  3
Anna M      "         Dau  1
Robert Ringrove Son in law 19  Bricklayer journeyman
Mary    Ringrove Sis in Law 37

All born in Grimstone and living ....ow Green, Grimstone

Checked back on the 1851 to see if he might have had any older children

John Bateson  26  Lab
Sarah     "        28
Robert    "          9
Thomas   "         3
Susannah  "       10mts
Mary Ringrove   25 sis in law  Pauper

Again all born in Grimstone (only ones)

Robert age 9 is possibly Mary Ringroves son

Maybe Alfed hadn't popped out just yet???

Hope this might be of some help. All the best Angela.

Thanks Angela and Teresa.

I have found some other Batesons (1881 and 1901 Censuses) living in West Ham/Canning Town at the same time as Alfred who come from Lynn, Grimston/Grinstone,Leziate North Wooton and Gayton.  So I think I am on the right track.  It's a shame that the 1851 Gayton Census is so difficult to read.

In the meantime, I have ordered Alfred's marriage certificate.  Debbie

Success!  I have found Alfred Bateson via a very old posting on Norfolk Surnames.  He was born in Grimstone in April 1858.  His parents were George Bateson and Maria Bateson nee Shinn.  There were lots of Shinns in Gayton.

I am now in touch with someone who shares my gg grandparents.

Hi Dimps,

I am delighted for you. Your brick wall has come tumbling down. and you have found some cousins to boot.

Absolutely wonderful. I will check around on the 1861 around his grandparents homeplace incase they are around the area if you want. Did Alfred have any sibling? Do you know where they were born. It might help narrow things down.

Let me know if you  need any further lookups I have the 1841, 1851 and 1861 so just ask ok.

Congradulations again.

Angela.

I have been having a look at your family and trying to move it on a bit for you.
(Hope you don't mind)

I couldn't find George in 1861 or 1851 so I tried the 1881 to find an age for them  and found George and Maria Bateson both 53 living at 22 young st, West Ham. George born in Leziate and Maria in Gayton.

So I tried the 1841 and the only George I could find was this one.

Mary Binch/Birch 35 Ind  y
Elizabeth Bateson 15     y
George    Bateson 10     y

Living in Grimstone

As you know the 1841 doesn't give relationships so don't know if this is going to be of any use to you.

Had a look in 1841 for Shinns. There is a tidy cluster of them in Gayton but sadly no Maria, there is a Mary age 12 and a Mary Ann age 1

Tried the 1851 for Maria and only came up with this.

Maria Shin  unmar  24  born Gayton
George "                  6                "
Elizabeth "               1                "   (illigit dau)

Confusing entry again as Maria was unmarried why isn't George listed as illigit??

Could this be your Maria before she married George. Its not uncommon for couples to have kids before marriage. Perhaps George was trying to find work in London before they married and settled  down??

If you want the other Shin/Shinn families I found in 1841 just let me know ok

All the best Angela.

Thanks Anjo,

Sorry not to reply sooner - I've been tied up with another branch of my tree (based in Sussex) and have found a Bateson relative (a third cousin, I think) with whom I have been exchanging information.

I've not had a chance to check what you have found against what I have yet - but anything you do find will be most gratefully received and will be chucked into the "melting pot".  Presumambly all the Batesons in that area are related somewhere along the line (and the Shinns/Shins likewise).

I have a distant relative, by marriage, in the Sussex bunch who has Lincolnshire Batesons in her family - so perhaps these are related to the Norfolk ones too.

Best wishes
Deborah

No problem,

Its exciting when you find someone else connected to your tree.  I know what its like. Hope between you you can thrash them out and get them sorted.

All the best Angela.

I am so excited as I have only gone on this site today.
My grandfather is Alfred Bateson born Grimston 1857-1928.
I know about him from my mother(still alive).
He remarried when Julia (nee Norman)died which is my branch
I have photos etc He returned to grimston to be Landlord of the New Inn 1922.
what aspects are you interested in.

I would like to know what happened to Julia please his first wife and when she died. She worked in the jam factory I think  as I am trying to find out about my grandmother whom he married/had child with before 1900 yet there was a child Robert sander bateson 1900-1901 who I dont think is my side.

What light can you throw?
