Hi LINMACK,

I am sorry for the delay of 7-odd months since your post.  I have not looked at the Bateson line for a very long time, as I have been concentrating on other branches.

How exciting!  I had come across the landlord of the New Inn, in passing, when I first started researching the Batesons - but put him on the backburner.

The birth of another child around 1900 might explain why Alfred and Julia seem to be living apart according to the 1901 Census.

I'll P.M.

Alfred Bateson married Julia Norman in Ipswich in 1877.  Julia was brought up by her grandparents, William Norman (b. c1797, Woolverstone, Suffolk) and Mary Ann Madder (b. c1805 East Bergholt, Suffolk).  Julia's mother was Jane Norman (b. 1841 Ipswich).  Julia was born in New Cut St Peter, Ipswich in 1858.  She was with her grandparents and Jane in 1861, at Station Road, Ipswich.  In 1871, she was with her grandparents in Chelmondiston, Suffolk.

All of Alfred's family that I have been able to trace, so far, had moved down to Plaistow by 1881 (apart from sister Charlotte, who was a lieutenant in the Salvation Army and was living in Camberwell).

By 1901, Julia and Alfred seemed to be living separately.  Julia was recorded as wife and working in a jam factory and was living with the children in North Woolwich.  Alfred was recorded as single, and was boarding with Edward Rickwood and Edward's sister (and, I assume, Alfred's future wife) Elizabeth Rickwood, not far away in "Tidal Basin".

Back in Grimston, in 1871 and 1861, the Bateson family (Alfred and his siblings, plus parents George Bateson and Maria nee Shinn) were living under the surname Birch/Burch!  They married (under the name of Bateson) in 1851.  Their children were registered as Bateson.  See Anjo's reply above (5.2.05).

In 1851, Maria was single, and in Gayton Workhouse with two illegitimate children:  George (aged 6) and Elizabeth (aged 1).  I have found the birth in the Freebridge Lynn R.D. of Maria Elizabeth Batesend Shinn (March Q 1850).  The birth of a George Shinn was registered in Freebridge Lynn in the June Q of 1844.

I'm supposed to be doing the shopping, so I'll add references later.

Maria Shinn and George Bateson married soon after - on 15th September 1851.  Curiously, George's surname was recorded as Beateson (Vol. 13, Page 215) and a father's name and trade were recorded.  This was corrected on 16th July 1891 - the spelling was changed to Bateson and the father's name and trade deleted "as G.B. was illegitimate and took his mothers name."  The name George Bateson has been squeezed into the marriage index (presumably in 1891) in Vol. 13, Page 214a.  Maria's father was recorded as Warner Shinn, Labourer.
