Looking for family of Pte Henry Charles MARSHALL
« on: Sunday 31 August 08 05:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any decendants of Pte Henry Charles MARSHALL, of the 1st Battalion AIF (Australian Imperial Forces). Service No. 577.
Henry C Marshall served in WWI at Gallipoli, was wounded and died of wounds at sea on 10 June 1915.

Henry C Marshall was a photographer. I have an album which belonged to my grandfather Pte Ernest Clive BUCK. Service No 571 who served in the same Coy with Marshall.

The album is a set of 350 photographs: Kensington (Sydney) to Cairo (Egypt), Showing Movements of First Infantry Batt. of the AIEF.

I believe that Marshall put together quite a few of these albums and printed an index to the photos and sold them to some of his infantry buddies as a souvenir of their campaign. This must have been done before the action on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. The index to the photos notes it was printed by "ADVOCATE" DEVONPORT.

Pte Henry Marshall's enlistment and Service dossier gives his next of kin as his father Mr A W Marshall who was a Policeman and later a Photographer in Stewart Street, Devonport Tasmania. He also had a sister Miss E Marshall of the same address.

Some of the correspondence in the Service dossier is regarding an Album of photos which was on Pte Marshall at his death and was supposed to be shipped to his sister. There is no record that his sister recieved the album.

I believe the album would have had the same Kensington to Cairo group of photos and would be interested to make contact with any of Pte Marshall's decendants if they are interested in finding more about there great (great) uncle's service in the Great War.

I guess I am looking to find out if his sister Miss e Marshall married and had any children.

Our family are planning to donate my gandfather's album to the Australian War Memorial in due course.

Susan

Actually, on further thought - if the index to the photo album was printed in Devonport, Tasmania, then the whole album of photos with the index was probably printed after Marshall's father and sister received his belongings in the year after his death.

Marshall's father and sister could have assembled the album with a printed index to the photos and offered copies to the returned servicemen of the 1st Infantry Battalion E Coy as a souvenir.

Hmmm

Hi,

I was just doing a search on my family and came across your 2008 post. My gret grandmother was Miss E Marshall - late Mrs Elizabeth Jane Brown. I am actually named after her. I am interested to know if you have donated the album to the Aust War Memorial. I live in Canberra so could go and look at the album. Interestingly I used to work at the AWM.

Regards

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,
I haven't been on Rootschat for a while and just read your message. Fantastic to connect with you. We have not donated the album to the AWM yet, but I have photographed the album, so can send you some images if you are interested. I will send you a personal message with my contact details.
Regards Susan

Hello Susan,

My name is Andrew Holt and my partner is Lydia Marshall.  I have been tracing her family tree for about two years now and came across your RootsChat message this morning.  You are correct about Henry being a photographer as his father A.W.Marshall had a studio in Devonport Tasmania where Henry helped out and seemed to have developed an interest.  I have attached a photo of Henry.

Lydia's relationship is great grand daughter of Henry Charles. To explain this further Henry Charles' father was Alexander W Marshall. Alexander's brother was John Boyd Marshall who is Lydia's great grandfather.

Elizabeth in Canberra appears to be related to John Boyd Marshall's sister Elizabeth Jane Brown (nee Marshall) who married William Thom Brown.  Interestingly, William Brow's eldest son Matthew was seriously wounded at Gallipoli in 1915, however, he was hospitalised in Egypt then UK and returned to another unit in France only to be killed in action 4 days later as Le Barque in Feb 1917.

As with Elizabeth in Canberra, Lydia and I would really love to see some of Henry's photographs.  I haven't been using RootsChat for very long and I really need to establish contact with Elizabeth now that she is known to us through your message (and this forum) which we are so very grateful to you for sharing.

We look forward to hearing from you soon

Best regards
Andrew and Lydia

Hi,

I found your discussion about Henry Charles Marshall very interesting - we hold a copy of the album here at the State Library of NSW and we have recently had it digitised:

http://www.acmssearch.sl.nsw.gov.au/search/itemDetailPaged.cgi?itemID=1055269

However we don't have a list of captions, so cannot identify any of individuals. If any of you have come across the listing, I would be very grateful!

Hi Elise - again!

I'm at home and I've found the indexes that Susan Buck kindly sent me.  How can I get these to you?  They are jpeg's (photo's) of the pages and are reasonably legible.  If you want you can mail me your email address to
