Pollock, Smith, Boggs, Stewart
« on: Saturday 30 August 08 06:14 BST (UK) »
Hello all
Hope someone can assist me in finding information on Robert Pollock of Drumoolish, who was born around 1778.  He married Isabella Smith.  They had at least 8 children, Archibald, Smyth, James, Robert, Maria, Isabella, Liza and Mary Ann.
I understand Robert died at the age of 98 in 1876, and Isabella in 1869.
My husband is descended from their son Robert John who married Mary Nelson of Killymuck in Australia in 1868 - he had emigrated in 1863.
Their son John Thomas who lived in Australia married Elizabeth Boggs, daughter of Samuel Boggs of Drumnacannon and Mary Matilda Stewart of Killymuck.
Any information would be appreciated.
Another mystery I'd love to solve is that Elizabeth Boggs stayed with the McNeill family (mentioned in my first post )when she arrived in Australia, but I have not been able to find a link between these families.
Rosie
McNeill - Moynock, Kilrea, Eden
Armstrong-Kilrea area
Sloan - Kilrea
Irwin - Lisnagrot
Pollock -Tamlaght O'crilly, Drumoolish
Nelson - Killymuck
Boggs - Kilrea
Stewart -  Killymuck

Sorry there haven't been any replies here yet. It can be very difficult to get information pre civil registration but you seem to have found townland names for your families which is the most important and often the hardest detail to find.
You mentioned that Robert Pollock and wife Isabella died in 1876 + 1869- have you their death certificates to see who the informants were? Did any of their children stay in Ireland or do you just know what happened to the son Robert?

PRONI have Will extracts online now (www.proni.gov.uk) and you could try searching for Pollocks, etc. there. Townlands and dates of deaths should appear in the extract. If you hover your mouse over the abstract column you can see enough of the entry to decide whether it might be of interest.

I am looking for an Elizabeth Nelson Pollock who died 25 May 1910 Gulgong, NSW.
Is this one of your Australian Pollocks ?

Interestingly the FamilySearch site has birth records of :
Archibald Pollock ,Ballymoney Jan/March 1883
Smith Pollock,Ballymoney Apl/June 1883
They are very unusual names so I wonder if  they are descended from the your family.

There are still some Pollocks in Drumoolish in the 1901 census....Here's Smyth Pollock 64 with Robert J 33, an Archie aged 16 and a Bella 24...again family names.

<a href="http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Tamlaght/Drumoolish/1521368/">here
</a>
If you search the ifhf site using Smith as the father's name you'll get:

 John 1866
 Henry 1869
 Eliza Jane 1871
Isabella 1872
 David 1876
 Henry 1881
 Archibald 1883
 Washington 1884
Samuel 1886

If you put in Smyth you get:

 Henry Thomas 1874
 James 1878
 Jane 1879

If Elizabeth died in 1910 aged 50 that puts her birth around 1860 so would John James Pollock (b.1844) not be a bit young to be her father?
Perhaps neither of those records are the correct ones.

Hi Patricia,
The only information I have on your query is:

John James POLLOCK
born 1844 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
died 1913 Kiama, NSW
married 20 June 1872 Newcastle, NSW to Margaret BROWNE  (born 21 Feb.1842  Broulee, NSW)

I don't think they are my Pollocks.

Patricia- would be best if you start a new topic looking for your Pollocks on the ANGUS (Scotland) board as there doesn't seem to be a connection to County Londonderry (Ireland) Pollocks here.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,86.0.html

When you start a new topic please post as much detail as you can (dates, census information, etc. that you've already found)- there's no point is us looking up census records, etc. only to discover that you've already found them but not mentioned that. It's a good idea to find as much information in Australian records as you can- some certificates will list parents' names, how long in a province, etc. which can be useful in tracing earlier records before the person arrived in Australia.
