A quick question. I just realised that it says East Dereham Norfolk Relief for Harriet. Would the Relief bit mean she was on Parish Relief, only I've not seen that on any other census for her? I just assumed that her family cared for her.

Sue

ps Brilliant Jen, and that explains the name change too. You're a star  :)

Not sure about the parish relief question, sorry.

I have just had a look at the original image for the marriages of all Hannah Hardys in Dec 1857. There are three entries under that name but it is extremely unclear and I can't tell whether or not any of them match up with the one for Charles Robert Hawes in Holbeach.

Guess it's money time if you really want the answer but my bet is on that marriage in Holbeach!

Cheers,

Jen

Sue, I think that would be right that she received help from the local parish, someone else may have a better explanation than me though.

I have seen other entries where relief is given to a widow with children etc.

mmm. had trouble connecting to site for a while.

Jen

Anyway, I agree Jen, too big a match not to be them. The Hardy family drifted between Long Sutton and Dereham for many years before settling there circa 1898 so I'll stick with that one. If it was my direct line I'd send for the cert but as its Aunts, for now at least, I'll hold off.

Once again my thanks. I've been hunting them on and off for years.

Cazay

Thanks. I think I'll pop over to the Norfolk Forum and see if anyone can help with that.

Thank you both  :)

Sue

Marriage Dec 1857
HAWES    Charles Robert         Holbeach    7a   69[85]   (this means 695 or 698 - image looks like 698 to me) No one else on that page apart from-
MAYS    Hannah         Holbeach    7a   698

This appears in the Holbeach district transcription as

13 Dec 1857 Sutton St Mary
Charles Robert HAINES (illeg) to Hannah MAYS (illeg)

Hi

Oh dear, now I am confused. The other main part of my Hardy family is Mayes! That is 'my' Hannah and Harriets' parents were Samuel Hardy and Ann Mayes. I have Hannah's parents marriage from East Dereham PRs 1836 and Hannahs' birth from GRO (not the cert though) 1838.

Need to think about this one.

Anyway, thanks for looking for me, most appreciated
