1861/71 Census please
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 10:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have Fanny (bapt Hannah) HAWES and Charles HAWES on the 1881 census living in Sutton St Mary, Lincs.

I've been unable to find their marriage so wonder if sks could check the 1861 and 1871 census to see if they are together then.

Hannah was born East Dereham Norfolk 1838
Charles born Long Sutton, Lincs c1829

There's a son, Thomas Samuel Hawes age 12 b Long Sutton on the 1881 who should be on 1871.

Many thanks for any help

Hi

Thank you so much for that. Brought another puzzle out though ::)

I actually found a Robert Hawes with wife Hannah and they had John W 2years and Lewis 2 months on the 1861. Question is, was Robert really Charles or did Robert die and she then married his brother!!!! Trouble is I still can't find a marriage nor a possible Robert Hawes death.

Ah well, on with the search :)

Thanks again, most appreciated

1861/ Little London, Long Sutton

Robert Hawes, 25, ag lab, Long Sutton
Hannah, wife, 26, Norfolk, Market Dereham
John William, son 2, Long Sutton
Lewis, son, 2months "        "
Caroline Stanhope, visitor,34, Servant, Sutton St. Nicholas,( otherwise Sutton)
Mary J Stanhope, 1 visitor, Holbeach

Odd that Charles is now called Robert but it looks like the same family. What I read as Levi in '71 is definitely Lewis in '61. The birthplace of Caroline Stanhope is as it is written, or at least, as I have read it)

Sorry, I missed the second page, so didn't see Harriett Hardy.

I have been trawling through FreeBMD and can find no marriages for either Robert or Charles Hawes with a spouse named Hannah.
You might find that you will have to send for the birth certificate of the eldest child, which will give you his mother's maiden name.

I'll have another try.

Hi Jen

Thank you again. :) Having Harriet with them proves (to me) that it's the right family. Her maiden name was Hannah Hardy.

Cazay, Yes, Harriet was Hannahs' sister, both my 2x Gt Aunts. Harriet was born blind and lived all her life with Hannah and Charles after their marriage.

As to why Robert/Charles changed names, I have a couple of mine in this family doing that. Maybe they preferred the name they chose, who knows. Just makes things even harder for us lol.

Thanks again for your help

Sue
