Gloucester burials please......
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 22:42 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,
I wonder if there is anyone who has records of - or visits - Gloucester Cemeteries??  My wife's grandparents and great-grandparents are buried in Gloucester somewhere.  They are:

Henry Levi HAWKINS - died Aug 1959 aged 72
Gladys Augusta HAWKINS (nee WARD) - died approx 1975 aged approx 82.
Edgecombe Thomas WARD - died approx 1949 aged approx 88
Augusta WARD (nee GOSNEY) - died approx 1940 aged approx 74

I'd really appreciate any records or even photo's if possible.

Cheers,
Garry

Hi Helena,
thanks for taking the time and trouble to provide this information.  However, I do already have the birth and marriage records.  I think I'm guilty of not making it totally clear it was the burial records that I'm after.  Though they are fairly recent burial in family history terms, we do not know now where the burials took place.  On m,y side of the family I have managed to find most of my grandparent and great-grandparent graves - though sadly one of those is unmarked.  It would be just great to find these for my wife......

Garry,

The second edition of the National Burial Index gives no information but I checked the ONS death index and found the death registration of Henry L Hawkins aged 72 in the Reg. Dist of Gloucester in the Sept. qtr of 1759 ONS's GRO ref. Vol 7b Page 338.

A Gladys Hawkins' death was registered in the Sept qtr of 1975 in Watford ref. Vol. 10  Page 0722.  Birth date given as "About 1895"

I do not think you will learn much from the d-certs even if they are the correct ones.

Regards

Chas

Later - Whoops!  1975 of course :D

Thanks Chas!

I don't think I'll go for any certificates but the data is handy for the future.  If I really need the date that's a way to do it!  I am not certain if that's the right Gladys HAWKINS, I don't know of a Watford connection.  I'm told she died in Gloucester.......

Cheers,
Garry

Hi Garry

do you have any living relatives who could narrow down the search area a little for you?

Is it likely that they stayed in Dursley for example?  Much easier to search than the whole of Gloucester.  Also bear in mind that those from out fo the county sometimes say "Gloucester" meaning "Gloucestershire" - a whole different proposition!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots!

long time no chat;  you have helped me in the past quite a bit.  I really have appreciated it....

No, my wife's father's side is a bit sparse now and we have asked all living relatives as much as we can.  All are quite certain, including my wife's older cousins, that the grandparents and great-grandparents were living in Gloucester/Barnwood, and are buried in Gloucester somewhere.  I was hoping someone may have them on a burials or memorials index??  I know some cemeteries do have them, or familyhistory societies have done surveys themselves.

If I lived closer I'd go an spend time myself just looking around the various cemeteries but that could take several days!!

Cheers,
Garry

Hi,
If your rellies lived in Barnwood, they would in all probability have been buried in Coney Hill Cemetery.  There is also a Crematorium there, so any ashes would probably have been scattered there.  If they were church-goers, they may have been buried in the churchyard at St. Lawrence, Barnwood.

Thanks Dibley!! :)

if I do have to resort to a foot slog, then I now know where to start.  They were "unchurched" so Coney Hill sounds the best bet!!

Cheers,
Garry
