Any fathers?

Not much chance ... registration (and fathers' names) didn't begin till July 1837.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hi Woodlands
Welcome to rootschat.   Are you anywhere near an LDS Family History Centre?  They are worldwide and listed on www.familysearch.org   You can order the film of the parish register and search it for yourself.   That shows burials too which is always interesting as you can build up a complete picture of the family.  They will also be at Carlisle record office if anyone happens to be going there.    Assuming that they were local then their baptisms may appear on the IGI as both parishes are covered.  Have you found them in all the census records?   Sometimes you get an elderly parent with them.

Are they the couple living in Watermillock in 1851?   Joseph is an ag lab from Castle Sowerby and Mary Ann is born Scotland?    Children Thomas, John, George, Jospeh, William and Dinah?

Hi to those who have kindly replied so far & thank you.

Re my above lookup request.
We started researching the Greenhows 30 years ago (before computers ;)) & have extensive family. Joseph Greenhow's father we know was Thomas but we have been unable to find Mary Ann Taylor's father or family. She was born in Moffat (Dumfrieshire) according to the 1851 census probably about 1818. Back then we had noted the marriage entry but cannot remember or find any written details of it.......did we just get it from the IGI? We do remember looking at bishops transcripts & registers at Carlisle, & the Mungrisdale/Greystoke registers sometimes gave a lot of info re parents etc. We still have our old notes.
We have tried Scotlandspeople etc but no matches. Visited Moffat churchyard recently but to no avail.

A father's name might just give us something more to go on.

Re the family in Watermillock in 1851. Yes these are they.

My husband & I now live in the Highlands, whilst there is an LDS church, the opening hours for research are not suitable for us to use. We have made use of their facilities in Leeds many years ago.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I'd read on this site where someone had the Mungrisdale/Greystoke registers on microfiche?

Just want the entry checking please to see if father is given &/or place they gave as living at.

Joseph's father Thomas was a Yeoman at West Ing, Mungrisdale. Joseph & Mary Ann moved to Thackthwaite, Watermillock & Thomas did eventually go live with them.

Hope that fills in a bit more. I was trying to be brief with my first posting. :)

Ah, you will soon learn that it does not pay to be brief!    Give as much as you have - especially if you have census etc as it saves others looking for information you already have and they can concentrate on what you actually want.  If you use the search box at the top of the page to search the rooschat site you might find who has the fiche you want and then you can direct the post at them.  Once you have posted a few more times you will be able to use our personal message system and contact them direct.  You click on the scroll under their name.
Have you tried looking at the Scotlandspeople site for Mary?
I started 30 years ago too!     I think I actually enjoyed the hunt more then as it was more challenging than just sitting at a computer.

Hi Andrea,

Yes I agree, I think it was more exciting before computers. Having said that though, being in the Highlands, our research would have come to a standstill without it.

Thanks for help re posting, I will try that as I think I have found the person who had the fiche.

Yes have tried Scotlandspeople. Only 2 Mary Ann Taylors & not anywhere near where she was supposedly born. It is possible of course that she was from Cumbria & her family were moving around. The area where the Greenhows lived was where the Borders & Scots drove down their cattle & there were many hiring fairs etc.

I have a possible year of death....1859 Penrith district but there were 2 in that year. Her last child was born about 1857/58 & she was dead by 1861.

I shall keep trying!
Thanks,
Margaret

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your prompt reply! Wow..you've got Greenhows. That's interesting about Mary Jacques. Greenhow is actually my husbands direct line.

Would be interested in your line. We have worked on the following.

Josephs father Thomas Greenhow was Bapt 25/7/1791 to Dan Greenhow & Mary Jacques. Other children were Elizabeth, John, Mary & Abraham.
Dan & Mary were married 17/1/1788 BUT Dan had been married before to Elizabeth Workman of Berrier 6/9/1768 & had one child, another Joseph bapt 29/6/1769
This Mary Jacques we believe had previously been married to an Isaac Noble 6/6/1775 Greystoke.
We don't know who Dan Greenhow's father was but a possible is Joseph Greenhow of Moor End Mungrisdale as we found a Dan bapt 25/9/1740 Moor End.

Any of the above ring any bells?

But thank you for your reply.
Margaret
