Schools in Wotton 1898-1906
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 05:14 BST (UK) »
What school might a girl of 6 or 7 start attending in about 1898 in Wotton under Edge? She lived with her grandparents who owned a shop in Long Street and owned property  at some stage in Orchard Road. Her parents placed a great store by education, so I imagine it would have been a 'good' one!

Hi Merilyn,

The best school in and around Wotton-under-Edge is and was Katharine Lady Berkeley School, or KLB as it is known, which was founded in 1384. It is still going strong.
However it did not become co-educational until 1900 so might not have been the first school attended by your ancestor.
You can find out about the school at http://cotswoldedge.org.uk/w-u-e/klb.htm#
Hampton - Bristol, Glos. Devizes, Wilts.
Vincent - Bristol, Glos.
Watts - Devizes, Wilts. Potterne, Wilts
Jenkins - Bristol, Glos.

KLB is a secondary school, so she wouldn't have been there til she was older.

The primary school in Wotton is the Blue Coat School - Link Here

I believe Wotton's Heritage Centre has their records but it would also be worth your while looking that up with a search engine - i'll come back if I have time to look myself.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

p.s. excuse my manners - should have said Welcome to both of you!  :D

Ah - this tells you something important:

http://wotton-under-edge.com/education

Wotton was quite a centre for non-conformists, so if your ancestor was NC you might find that she attended the British School, mentioned in the link above. and also here:

Thanks for that, Her parents were married and buried at St Marys in Wotton, I'm not up with the religious thing yet, I guess that makes them C of E? Dorothy (the lady in question) certainly was. Family history says "she lived with her grandparents the Richings in Wotton until she was called by her father Charles Wentworth to come home and instruct her younger siblings as he had a falling out with the local schoolmaster in Uffington. She did such a good job that other village children joined the classes"

Yes, it sounds likely that she was Church of England then.

Try contacting the Heritage Centre:

I recall that they had some school records but not the right period for my rellies - mine were earlier than yours though - worth a try!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
