Sutcliffe family
« on: Tuesday 26 August 08 15:13 BST (UK) »
Desperate for help.
I am trying to find the back history of Ernest Sutcliffe  born approx 1885 in the Bradford workhouse his mother was Mary Ann Sutcliffe, may have a connection with Eli Salter may not.
Both can only be found in these records and then disappear until 1903 when Ernest is the father other of my gfather (Albert Thorpe).
Do the names mean anything to anyone.
Cheers,
Glenn

Hi,
MARY ANN SUTCLIFFE was a boarder at the house of WILLIAM IBBOTSON.
This was at 6 Carr Syke, Heaton, Bradford.

ELI SALTER lived with his wife & 3 Children at 100 Napier Street, Bradford

Hi

Its possible that Ernest was adopted soon after his birth in the Workhouse and his "parents" changed his name.

Hi, Ernest is proving a problem, He retained the surname until his death, and I believe had a spell in the army prior to 1903, He was certainly in Bradford 1907 when he married his son's (my gfather) mother.
All I know about his time to that is his birth in the workhouse. I have details of his mother admitting herself, leaving with him. His baptism approx 12 months later. one of the three addresses Mary Ann Sutcliffe uses around this time is the address of Eli Salter and by what may be a very strange coincidence the address Ernest Sutcliffe gives at the time of his marriage in Dudley Hill, Bradford and is the home of Eli Salter.
I am not aware of any siblings etc. as it appears he spoke little about his past. On his marriage certificate he names Mary Ann Sutcliffe as his mother but she is not shown as deceased.
I am really scratching my head re this close ancestor of mine.
Thank you for your ideas so far.

Glenn
