Can I be sure- Stewart/ Forsyth - Inverness/ Leith
« on: Monday 25 August 08 12:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been fairly successful in tracing back my grandmother's ancestors, finding some interesting skeletons along the way. My grandmother had always said that her great grandmother Elizabeth Stewart had come from Inverness to Leith Edinburgh, to look after her granddaughter (Elizabeth Stewart/ Johnstone) whose mother had died young.

Info so far:

Elizabeth Johnstone (Elizabeth is my ggrandmother) D Cert in 1920 shows parents Daniel Stewart and Agnes Campbell
Agnes Campbell DC 1867 shows that she was unmarried and died 5 days after childbirth (Lothian health archives have record with Daniel as n.o.k.)
Daniel Stewart's DC shows no record of his parents he died 1900
Donald Stewart (Daniel's) BC (son of Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth Forsyth) recorded in Cromdale and Inverallan (Grantown area) 20/02/1832
Alexander Stewart DC (aged 59 in 1863) shows him married to Elizabeth Forsyth
George Stuart (son of Alexander Stuart) birth recorded in Peterhead 30/03/1834

The above is backed up by censuses in Leith with some addresses known to my family:
1851 Alexander Stewart b1806/Elizabeth aged 39 b1812 in Inverness/David aged 19, b1832 in Elginshire/ George aged 17
1861 Alexander Stewart ages 56/ Elizabeth aged 47 b1814 Inverness/ Daniel aged 29 b1832 in Frantown Inverness (? Grantown) /George aged 27 b1834 in Peterhead, Aberdeen
1871 Eliz Stewart aged 55 b1816 in Dingwall Rosshire/Daniel aged 38 b1833 in Grangetown (? Grantown)/ Elizabeth (his daughter) aged 3 b1868
1881 Eliz Stewart aged 65 b1816 in Inverness/ David aged 48 b1833 in Grantown/ Elizabeth aged 13
1891 Eliz Stewart aged 77 b1814 in Grantown/ Daniel aged 59 b1832 in Grantown/Elizabeth aged 23 (just before her marriage)

My problem has been finding Elizabeth's death cert to confirm her parents and then link to other detail below.

IGI shows an Elizabeth Forsyth born 1810 daughter of George Forsyth and Christian McCrae in Inverness
Elisabeth Forsyth BC 1810 shows same parents and witnesses Christopher McCrae and Colin Forsyth
Following a search on Genes Reunited I found a tree which may support the above info re Elizabeth’s parents, which seems to backed up by the 1841 census in Aberdeen. The Genes tree gives Elizabeth several brothers and sisters born in Inverness and Ross and Cromarty and her grandparents as Christopher McCrae and Colin Forsyth.
Elizabeth b1810 /Marjory b1813 /Colin b1815 /James b1816 /George b1821/Christian b1825 /Mary Ann b 828 /John b1835

I have been in contact with the “Genes” tree owner who feels confident that this is “my” Elizabeth Forsyth/ Stewart . It seems that the Forsyth family moved to Aberdeen (without George senior ? dead)
In Aberdeen in 1841 - At one address there is a Christian Forsyth (mother) aged 40/ Christian (daughter) 17/ Colin 20 /George 15 /John Forsyth 5 and a Donald Stewart aged 5
At another address is James Forsyth aged 25 / Elizabeth Stewart aged 25 / George Stewart aged 5 (and many others)

What do you think? Without the DC of Elizabeth Forsyth/ Stewart, can I be fairly sure that the line I have traced back to her is linked to the detail I found in the “Genes” tree which seems to be backed up by the 1841 Census in Aberdeen - with an Elizabeth Stewart living with George and her mother Christian Forsyth with Donald/Daniel. Alexander, her husband is not there.

Hope this is fairly clear?!

Carolyn

Hi

Just a quick update.

Thanks to some help from a friend I have now found Elizabeth Stewart's DC. She died in North Poorhouse, Leith in 1897 "aged 92". I think I had missed this in previous trawls through SP because I thought she was born 1810 at the earliest. Unfortunately the missing link identifying her parents is not on the DC.
