Emily Baring Hamilton Brown
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 17:37 BST (UK) »
Emily B nee Dumble was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1883 but moved to Keswick before 1901 where her father was a photographer. Emily was a school teacher and became headmistress of Kendal Parish Church Infants School until she married at the age of 46 Rev Herbert Hamilton Brown a priest in Holy Orders in the Episcopalian Church, Utica NY USA in 1929. She and Rev HHB returned to UK in 1933 and Rev HHB became Vicar of Wix, Essex in 1934. Sadly he died in 1935. Emily then returned to Keswick (it is believed). She died in 1971.
Does anyone in Keswick remember this lady, please?

Perhaps a letter to the local paper might yield fruit?    I see her death is registered in the Claro district in the West Riding of Yorkshire so she did not die in Keswick.     What are you trying to learn here?  Her ancestry or simply bits about her?

Thank you, Sillgen. At this stage I am only going on what I have been told by a great-niece of Emily. I saw her death had been registered at Claro, a place I have never heard of! So I checked with Keswick to find there is a Claro Road there. I assumed that as I had been given her supposed Keswick address, Claro happened to be the name of registry office there. Obviously I was wrong and I need to research further. I know all about her ancestry - she was the second wife of my great uncle. But I do not know what happened to her after my uncle died in 1935.BGB

Hello,

I'm not related to you and dont know any more about Emily, but I have been looking up some of the history of my house in Keswick (built 1860 I think) and find that this is where the Dumble family (of Thomas, photographer) were living in 1901 at the time of the census.
It's interesting to think of all the people who have lived here over the years - we come from Newcastle too, like Emily.

Hi there
I think Sillgen's advice about contacting the local paper is particularly good , especially in the case of Keswick. The Keswick Reminder is one of those papers that goes to virtually every house in the district.  There's very little that doesn't get reported in the Reminder.

There is also Keswick Historical Society which has its own archive in the museum. Their website is

Hi BGB
Just had another look at this thread and I'm not at all sure that you mean Keswick, Cumbria.
When you say you spoke to Keswick was it the Yorkshire one East Keswick near Harrogate (which has a Claro Road) or the Cumbrian one. I know of no Claro Road in Keswick Cumbria.

Yes, Claro district is very much Yorkshire http://www.ukbmd.co.uk/genuki/reg/districts/claro.html
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thank you to all for your interest in Emily.
I can confirm she lived in Keswick at what had been her parents' house until her death in 1971. She actually died while taking the waters at Harrogate hence the Claro registration district. When I first found out about the Claro name I had no idea it was a registration district.
Emily had been headmistress of an infants school in Kendal.  She married my great uncle in 1929 but he died in 1934. He was then Vicar of Wix (Essex). I wondered what Emily did thereafter? I should have thought given WW2 she returned to teaching. I suppose my best bet would be to write to the local newspaper rather than the History Society to see if anyone in Keswick remembers her. It's not really a local history matter.

I would contact both.  The society has a wide network of people in the area.  I also have an aunt brought up in Keswick before the war so will ask her.
