Hello Elaine. This name is interesting. Were they Catholic? or possibly just some of the family Catholic?

I think at least some of them could be Catholic, my grandfather was George Harle Reed, and a rosary was found amongst his possessions when he died although he was not a practising Catholic.

The Harle comes from his grandmother who was Jane Sarah Harle.   I seem to have uncovered a family mystery as Jane Sarah was first married to Robert Norwood and they had three children although on all of the census she seems to be living with her parents and the children, Robert Norwood disappears after the 1861 census and then Jane Sarah pops up on the 1881 Census now apparently married to George Reed, my Great Great Grandfather, despite the fact that I have been unable to find a marriage entry for Sarah Jane and George, nor a death entry for Robert Norwood!

 Just the one gravestone:-

Sacred to the memory of William and Martha Harle who were drowned September/25/1871, both aged 52 years.

Adam,
In late 2008 you sent me Stephenson inscriptions, and I have finally discovered how some of them fit into the family so thank you again.  Having them helped me piece it all together.

Hello Sue. Thanks for letting me know that I have helped in some way.
I often get "thanks for the information" and may a time people don't even  bother  acknowledging
my replies.
Here are some more Stephenson inscriptions from the Baptist Chapel that I have brought up to date.

In affectionate remembrance of John Stephenson of Crook, who departed this life 13/March/1874 aged 45 years.

In memory of Henry Stephenson of Pike Stone, who died 14/August/1836 aged 65 years.
Also Jane, relict of the above, who died 7/June/1847 aged 70 years.

In affectionate remembrance of Hannah the beloved wife of John Stephenson of Pike Stone, who died 29/July/1883 aged 73 years.
Also of John Stephenson, who died 3/October/1892 aged 85 years.
Also of Ann their daughter, who died 21/June/1862 aged 13 years.
Also William their son, who died 5/March/1874 aged 28 years.

To the memory of Joseph Jopling of Hamsterley, who died 30/April/1849 aged 66 years.

Also Alice his wife, died 23/November/1845 aged 65 years.
Also Jane their daughter and wife of Anthony Stephenson, who died May/26/1866 aged 54 years.
Also the above Anthony Stephenson, who died 10/November/1888 aged 8o years.

Adam,
I don't recognize any of the new names but who knows what future research will find.  I will file these with the others and wait and see.  Thank you for all the work you do for all of us.

Hi Adam

I would appreciate any Jewitt information. They seemed to be in Hamsterley c.1750 - 1850.

Thanks

Bill
