My family research has just taken me to Croft or Cross Place, next to Hunslet Hall. John and Hannah Dale, John was a Gardener of 5 acres and 2

. He had daughters Emma (no Emmerdale jokes please), Maria, Harriet, Mary, and son from whom I am descended, John William. JWD continued to have market gardens at Beeston Hill prior to coming to the Isle of Man and gardening again. For years I lived overlooking gardens which had been known as Dale nurseries in the past, gardened by 2 gg uncles, but unbeknown to me for some considerable time.
Would like to know more about the life and times of the area circa 1851, from which I got the above info.
Also Hannah was born in Guirbro; I am guessing that this must Guisborough. Any suggestions?
We had always regarded ourselves as the Yorkshire Dales, but from the 1851 census I discovered that the first known John Dale was born in Nottinghamshire. Perhaps this could put an interesting slant on the story – could it be that we descend from one of Robin Hood’s merry men, Alan a Dale? (joking of course, but interesting to tell the grandchildren)
Any descendants from the girls out there; John William seemed to have brought all his brood to the Isle of Man?
Any info on Beeston Hill around 1880, especially the market gardens, would be appreciated.
Thank you for anything that may be posted, Susanne
