Hi Saphy
With a Christian name like John is inevitable that there is going to be more than one! However of the three that I've found I think it safe to rule two of them out.
First the two to be ruled out.
There was a John Carter baptised 6th October 1809. However, below that entry was another John being baptised 22nd January 1817 to the same parents, John Carter and Susanne Coutanche. A check of the showed that the first John had died 3rd March 1812. So for that reason I think we can rule those out.
That leaves us with John Carter born 12th March 1808 and baptised 27th March 1808 in St Brelade. His father was Richard Carter and his mother Susannah. Sadly no maiden name. The god-parents were James Joyce and Isabella his wife. What is useful is that Richard's occupation was quoted as "Out-pensioner, 3rd RV Battn"
Again below this entry was one for a Joseph Carter with the same parents. He was born 25th May 1810 and baptised 27th May 1810 and 7th April 1811. God-parents were John Allstock and Bower. Richard's occupation this time was "Pensioner, 3rd RV Battn". Sadly Joseph died 3rd December 1811, aged 18 months.
I did a quick search to see if I could find a marriage for Richard and Susannah but nothing came straight out at me which suggest, together with his occupation, that he didn't come from Jersey. It would be possible to find out more about his army record as he was obviously receiving a pension.
Hope that helps.
Stewart
PS I think RV stands for Rifle Volunteers
