Evans the Drapers-Newport,Bedwellty,etc.
« on: Thursday 21 August 08 23:44 BST (UK) »
Hello Monmouthshire,

Looking for my Evans family, quite a few who used to be Drapers in various places around Monmouthshire. In most of these instances I know the history up to 1901,but beyond this it gets difficult.

Firstly there is JAMES EVANS b.1863,Pencarreg,Carms.
In 1901 he is listed as a Master Draper and Shopkeeper of 144,Commercial Road,NEWPORT.
Wife-ELIZA J.UNKNOWN b.1868,Egloskerry,Cornwall.
Children-ELSIE M. EVANS b.1894,Newport
              BLANCHE S. EVANS b.1896,Newport
              OLIVE G. EVANS b.1899,Newport
I would like to know if anybody recognizes the family,or the business,or has any other info. regarding these.

Secondly there is his Uncle-WILLIAM EVANS b.1834,Pencarreg,Carms.
Between 1861 and 1881 he was a Draper in 158,High st.,BEDWELLTY employing 7 men. After this time he retired? back to his home parish.
He was married twice, firstly to JANE REES
Children-DAVID EVANS b.1857,Bedwellty
              THOMAS REES EVANS b.1863,Bedwellty
              POLLY JANE ANN EVANS b.1867,Rhymney
I know of David and Polly's families, but nothing of Thomas' family.

Again I would like to know if anybody recognizes this family[especially Thomas],or the business,or has any other info. regarding these. There is more also to this relation. As i've mentioned he was married twice and from his 2nd. marriage to Mary Rees[no relation to wife no.1!] he had another son-
JOHNY RICE EVANS b.1884
He was married I believe to Enid, and they had 1 son named-
JOHN RICE EVANS b.circa 1920
They used to live in Garth,Ty Winch Rd.,Llaneirwg,Cardiff
He married I believe Ann and they had 2 children.
I believe they retired to GILWERN,Nr.ABERGAVENNY.
I would like to know if anybody recognizes this family or could put me in touch with them.

Apologies for a long winded request but as all of these problems are inter-related I thought that it might be easier to list them all together rather than separately. There is more to do with other Evans the Drapers[same family] in Pontypridd,Merthyr and also Newbridge but that will have to wait for another day!!!

Thankyou,brawd houdini

I am responding to this part of your text:

According to the Online Parish Clerk database, no woman from Egloskerry was born in 1868 with the name ELIZA J. (with unknown surname)  However, there are two possible women that may be your Eliza J. from the vicinity at that time.  They are:
1.  Elizabeth Symons (daughter of James and Elizabeth Symons), who was christened on July 7, 1867 in Egloskerry and whose family resided at Skinnish in the parish.
2.  Elizabeth Jenkins Wadge (daughter of Richard and Mary Wadge), who was christened on September 23, 1866 in St. Thomas by Launceston (the parish next to Egloskerry).  The family resided at Tregadillet in St. Thomas.  Richard's occupation was a labourer.

My money is on Elizabeth Jenkins Wadge as your ELIZA J.

I enjoy researching any families from Egloskerry because my own ancestors are from that charming parish.  Let me know if you need more information about either of these ladies.

Hello Duane, thanks for replying to this post. This family is one of my brick walls,so any info. on them is welcome. My
interest mainly is in the Evans side but I might get some information re. Elsie,Blanche and Olive through following
Eliza's line.It would seem likely that she is Elizabeth Jenkins Wadge as that would tally with the name given on the 1901 census, however the fact that she was born in another Parish could muddy the water. The year of birth is rarely reliable in the census returns. If possible I would like to know if you might be able to find Eliza's parents and/or siblings, also if there are any of their descendants living in Egloskerry today.
Thankyou,David

I found your ELIZA J. WADGE in the 1871 Census at Linkinhorne (parish) and the dates checkout...
Kersbrook (residence name):
Richard C. Wadge, Head of residence, 30 yrs old, Ag Lab, Lewannick (birthplace)
Mary Wadge, Wife, 27 yrs old, Lewannick (birthplace)
ELIZABETH J., Daughter, 4 yrs old, St. Thomas (birthplace)
Annie Wadge, Daughter, 2 yrs old, St. Thomas (birthplace)
Mary J. Wadge, Daughter, 3 months old, Lewannick (birthplace)

I found no burial records for these people in Linkinhorne from the OPC database.

They obviously moved around quite a bit.

This family should not be confused with that of Richard (copper miner) and Mary A. Wadge in Linkinhorne during the 1861 and 1881 censuses in that parish.

No Wadges still living in Egloskerry, at least none with listed phone numbers that I could find.

However, there are at least three currently residing in the immediate vicinity:
J.P. Wadge at Trewanta Park, Lewannick, Launceston PL15 7QP
N.H. Wadge at South Parks Farm, Tresmeer, Launceston PL15 8QY
P.R. Wadge at Trillacott Grange, North Petherwin, Launceston PL15 8LS

Re: Griffiths in Llanddewi Brefi and Tregaron

Dear Brawd Houdini,

I think we might have a similar problem. I traced my family tree back to 1754, an Evan Griffith from Llanddewi Brefi who married and moved to Tregaron. I am also aware of The Griffiths Pedigree which leaves a Rees Griffiths in Llanddewi Brefi in 1711, but can't connect the two.

Maybe we should exchange notes and thoughts? Perhaps we are related?

Regards,

Evan.
