Andrews Family - Wellington
« on: Thursday 21 August 08 11:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I posted this message a while back on the WWI board and was told it may be better to post it here, so here goes.....

My Great Aunt, Ellen Irene Torrance, married a New Zealand Serviceman in October 1918.  His name was Edwin Simpson Andrews and I have the information from their marriage certificate that he was a Second Lieutenant N.Z.E.7.  They were married at Brokenhurst Parish Church.  I know there was a convalescence home there particulary for troops from New Zealand and India.  I would like to find out more about Edwin and why he was there.  I have also found some information about him on the Aukland Museum Cenotaph website.  I have been told by an elderly Cousin that they had three children, Joan, Phylis and William and that William (Bill) was a POW in WWII and I would also like to trace these family members. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Nickyhug

You will have seen on the Auckland Cenotaph website, that Edwin Simpson ANDREWS is listed as having served (WW1) in the Pacific region, in the  Samoa Campaign.    That he is in the Brockenhurst area in 1918, tends to suggest that he also saw service, further abroad.

His war service record would include details of hospitalisation (usually just a brief description of illnesses, wounds suffered etc.).    WW1 records are held by Archives New Zealand at their Wellington office and the great majority, are listed with a file number reference, on the Archives NZ "Archway" website.    Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a record for Edwin Simpson ANDREWS.
[You may though, like to send a query to Archives NZ to check further].

Obviously finding the children of this couple, is not easy.    (You appear a little uncertain on your other thread, as to whether the couple actually returned to New Zealand)  ???    Also, with a surname like ANDREWS, we would require further information such as second christian names (if any), for the children.

Great work by Althea.   :)
(Another of those probate files, not shown on the "Archway" site) ?

Nickyhug, Edwin's (will) probate record, hopefully should name a child or children?    (Details for purchasing same can be found on Archives NZ website).

It's possible too that the funeral director may be able to provide you with an address for next-of-kin given at the time of Edwin's death.  (I note that his wife died same year, and the same funeral director is listed).
Funeral director shown is "W. Abraham" (I suspect details on cemetery database are out-of-date?) ... they now have a website
              www.wabraham.co.nz

or you can e-mail them at

              info@wabraham.co.nz

Good luck with your search.

Hi Althea

Mmmm ...blimey !   Land documents (from experience, these are a bit of a pain to follow up on).

Here's hoping anyway that Nickyhug can obtain information more easily, from the other sources?    :)

Brockenhurst.  I was there in 2004 laying a wreath fo rthe Kiwi soldiers buried at St. Nicholas Churchyard... lovely church! Number One General Hospital was at Brockenhurst...  I could put you in touch with someone in UK, who may be able to assist, Chris may know more about this soldier Edwin Andrews.. nothing ventured, nothing gained!  90 Kiwi soldiers buried in the churchyard..
