Maria Ellen GOLDBY

I have an interest in her, as part of my GOLDBY research, and have just put together a webpage (not yet online).

Thomas GOLDBY b. c.1812 St Michael Oxfords, m. Harriet TAYLOR b. c.1819 St Peters Oxfords:
- son George Henry GOLDBY Chr 1841 Gt Farringdon, Berks, Coach painter and later Omnibus maker, m. Ellen NICHOLSON 4Q 1865 (line of my TAYLOR research);
- dau Harriet Elizabeth GOLDBY b. c.1848 Vauxhall, Surrey m. George Bissett DOWN: dau Jessie Bissett DOWN m. Edward Dudley CARR.

Jane SOMERTON m. George Cornelius CARR (father John Richard CARR, sometime alderman & mayor of Oxford)

Maria Ellen GOLDBY can be seen in the censuses, as a dressmaker in a haute couture establishment in London, then as a Lady's Companion, finally living "on her own means" - and with visitors, friends, Jane [SOMERTON] CARR, her sister Emma SOMERTON, and Jane's 2nd son Sydney [Sidney] Herbert CARR.

I'm looking for a link between Maria Ellen GOLDBY and Thomas GOLDBY, both b. Oxford. Overheard as a small child "The old girl at Brighton? She had a bit, didn't she?" - I'm wondering if this referred to Maria Ellen, who died in Brighton. (Frances M. TAYLOR [North Tawton, Devon line, and Willesden/Ealing/Isleworth, Middlesex] m. a descendant of Thomas GOLDBY of Oxford.)

The 1841 census for Thomas & Harriet(t) GOLDBY is not available online, and I think it may be illegible. I haven't found a baptism for him, or for Harriet [TAYLOR], nor for Maria Ellen.

You might find the following information useful:

From The National Probate Index:
GOLDBY Maria Ellen of 24 New Steine, Brighton, spinster, died 5 January 1910.  Probate London 25 February 1910 to Frederick William GOLDBY, glass painter.  Effects £1,304.2s.3d

The 1911 Census shows that Frederick William GOLDBY, glass painter, was then 60 years old, lived in Islington and was born in Lambeth.  A***y has his baptism at St Mary Lambeth on 7 July 1850, son of Frederick William and Mary GOLDBY.  This couple married on 10 Feb 1850 when Frederick William's father is given as Thomas GOLDBY and Mary's father is given as Stephen HODGES.

In the 1841 census Frederick [William] GOLDBY the elder is living with his parents Thomas and Ann GOLDBY in Shaftesbury Terrace, St George, Hanover Square, London.  Frederick's age is given as 13 years, Thomas's age as 63 years, and Ann's age as 60 years.  Ann was born in the county (Middlesex) but Thomas and Frederick were not.  There is no occupation given for Thomas.

In 1851 Thomas and Ann GOLDBY are living at Cranmer? Place, Waterloo Road, St Mary Lambeth.  He is a herald painter aged 71 and born in Abingdon, Berkshire, and Ann is aged 69 and born in Westminster.  By this time Frederick is married and he is living at James Street, Lambeth with his wife Mary and their son Frederick.  The elder Frederick is aged 25, a piano forte maker and born in Oxford.  Mary is aged 28 and born in Clapham, Surrey, and the younger Frederick is aged 10 months and born in Lambeth.

My thoughts are that the younger Frederick William GOLDBY might be Maria Ellen's nephew - the elder Frederick William being her brother.  Maria Ellen's will might establish whether this was so and also whether the Thomas GOLDBY born in St Michael Oxford in 1812 was also her borther.

Looking for Maria E Goldby born about 1831-1833

Oxon Ofordshire.

Your request is a little confusing.  Oxon is short for Oxfordshire taken from its latin name of Oxonia.  Are you looking for someone who was probably resident in (the city of) Oxford or is it more likely that they were elsewhere in the county of Oxfordshire?

I'm stuck on this one for the moment. My onsite pages for GOLDBY are here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cmtilbury/taylor_family/goldby_index_page.html

The probability seems that the three lines - Thomas, Frederick William, & Maria Ellen - were related (similar profiles, shared acquaintance) but no proof. Maybe the Oxon or Berks FHS could supply baptisms.

Thanks for all the help, will let you know if I find anything.
