Help Granddads changed his name
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 22:15 BST (UK) »
I found my G.Dad aged 8yrs living with family of Pugsley in Newport Mon.(His Mums Maiden Name in the 1901 census) However, Sarah (his Mum) is named "Thangettie" along with her son Richard. Where on Earth did she get this name from?

I have ordered a birth Cert for Richard. Feb 1893. died. Sept 1948 Named Purchase Haggett.Couldn't find him  under P.Haggett. It does not exist.
Is the name Thangettie within the realms of reasoning I can't find it anywhere.

Richard is the 1891 entry b Llandenny 1872 parents William P and Edith - have a look at the 1891 for Monmouth  - his aunt & uncle were surname Purchase

I'm a little confused at this information on reply. You see, G.Dads father, (Same name) his parents were Edith&William P.Haggett. Llandenny.1871-2.

Richard P.Haggett (or so I thought) no record of his birth date. I've checked with registras office Newport.
Today I found Richard  surnamed as Thangetti..........including his mother Sarah.in 1901 census.

I checked with Freebmd no luck there.

I read the first two letters of the surname to be Ha - reading from the image on Ancestry.  The H is very ornate but it's the same as the initial letter for Hodgson two houses up the page.

Don't ask me why there appears to be an odd letter in amongst the rest of the surname - it looks like an n as the third letter before first g -  but perhaps the enumerator was unfamiliar with the surname and did an approximation of Haggerty which might have been a name he was familiar with?  This could possibly explain what looks to me to be ie at the end of the surname.

Hope this helps?

Telford 1445, You possibly may have hit the nail on the head. When I spoke to the registrar's office (Newport before the last Bank Holiday) they seemed very positive of digging deeply for this name. However I may need to contact them as no reply has been forthcoming yet. Maybe in the next couple of weeks.

Apparently it has been accepted that Richard P.Haggett was christened, so another day in the Archives shortly, I think.
I wonder if anyone knows if a birth cert must be produced before a marriage can take place? otherwise how would he get married?
