William ROSS, buried in Laurencekirk
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 17:50 BST (UK) »
Hi There,
Can you help me?
I have just joined this site, so please bear with me.  My gt grandfather was William Ross, c1879.  He died in Croy, Invernesshire in 1956. He is buried in Laurencekirk and was a shepherd. My great Grandmother was Isabella Gibb and they married in 1904.  On the marriage certificate Williams parents are given as William Ross, Ploughman and Florence Smith. (It does not say maiden name).  They married at Burn of Guinea, Glenbervie.  On Williams death cert, his parents are given as William Bremner and Florence , Maiden surname Smith.  I have looked everywhere for a marriage with both names.  I have spoken to the grandson who registered the death.  He does not recall the name Bremner. I cannot find Williams birth certificate.  I have looked the census reports, and it does not say where he was born.  One possibility was Aberdeen not known.  Can you help me please, any lead would be good.  I have been looking for 2 years now and have come to the conclusion that he must have been illegitimate and boarded out by his mother.

Kind regards
Lynda

Hallo Lynda.  I searched the ScotlandsPeople index of births in Kincardineshire (you mentioned that the parents of William Ross were married at Glenbervie) for the birth of a William Ross between 1876 and 1881 but  the fathers were named either John or James.
I'm curious as to where you found the Glenbervie marriage as there is no record of a marriage between William Ross and Florence Smith in the whole of Scotland.  The same applies to William Bremner and Florence Smith.  It looks as if William (born ca 1879) was illegitimate. Having said that, his birth must be recorded  in one of the counties of Scotland ?
Sorry not to have been of more help.

Isles.

HI Isles,

Thank you for your reply.  The marriage that I was referring to was William Ross and Isabella Gibb.  It was on that marriage certificate that the reference made to his parents as William Ross and Florence Smith.  The cert did not indicate that they were married, as there was no  MS next to Florence's name.  I have hunted for about 2 years now and can find no marriage between William Senior and Florence.   And then if he was illegitimate, who would his mother have been?  Not sure where to go now with this one.
Thank you for looking, it is always good to have fresh eyes look at something.
Regards,
Lynda

Linda,
You dont say where in Laurencekirk, he was buried, If you can tell me this and possibly the plot number. (These records are with the Laurencekirk registrar - Banski) Then if you think there might be a headstone and it would help, I could have a look.

Hi There,

I went to Laurencekirk to look for the headstone as I could not find his death certificate.  He is in the cemetry next to the main road at top of Laurencekirk.  Not sure what it is called.  It was a very productive day as I also found my gt uncle James Ross's name on the war memorial next to it.  He is buried with my gt grandmother Isabella Gibb.  My problem is the names on the death certifcate which states that his fathers name is different from the name on the marriage certificate.  I have not managed to find his birth certificate as yet, but am planning a day at register house soon to see what this turns up.

Many thanks for your offer.
Kind regrds,
Lynda

Hi Lynda!

I don't have anything useful to add, but I was surfing the forum and came across your thread.  I'm just wondering if I've got this right or if I'm missing something........ I have had a glass or two you understand ;)

You are saying that the grandson registered the death but that Bremner means nothing to him. But wouldn't he have been the one to provide the parents details?

Aside from that, have you considered that it's possible that Florence Smith remarried after the death (assumption) of her first husband?  The Bremner may be the second marriage and therefore assumed to be the father later in life. In which case you should maybe be looking for Bremner/Ross marriages?  Just a thought really!

Lynda,
Have you tried writing to the 2 local weekly papers?
They are KINCARDINE OBSERVER. www.specialistmags.co.uk/atoz.php?
and the MEARNS LEADER   www.mearnsleader.co.uk.

If you can add a photo and get a personal interest slant on it, there will be a good chance that someone knows someone who can lay it on the line for you.

You could also ask 'Family Friends' newsagent on the High Street to put a notice in the shop window.

Cheers Digger88

Hello and thank you both.
I have written to one of the papers in Kincardine, I think the Mearns.  When I spoke to the grandson who regisdtered the death, he was quite confused about the Bremner bit.  He was 16 when he registered the death.  However, my great Aunt was still alive at the time and I think if it was wrong she would have rectified this.....but who knows.  I know that there would have been a bit of a palaver as he died in Croy and was brought back to Laurencekirk and buried beside my great grandmother.  It is all so confusing and I have spend lots of money on SP looking at the death certificates.  He appears in the 1881 census as an 8 year old, no parents.  In 1891 he is in Kincardine, as an ag labourer in a Bothy, no parents and born Aberdeenshire, kn.  So my wee search goes on and on.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Kind regards,
Lynda

The only it I have to add is this.

When my mother registered my fathers death
in 1958 she gave his brothrs name inplace
of his fathers.

Nobody who needed the certificat seemed to notice or care.

In later years I must have read it a dozen times before I noticed the error.

So what you read may not have been correct.
