trying to find ross's from kincardine
« on: Monday 18 September 06 02:36 BST (UK) »
I know of William Ross b.1838?who married Margaret Munro b.1851. They married 1877. They had Hugh, Hector, David, Flora, Alexander, William, Roderick.  My Grandfather was Alexander, he came to Canada in 1902.  Is any one out there who knows anything about these Ross's and Munro's. To be more specific they are from the Ardgy/Hilltown/Bonar areas. The youngest son Roderick married Elizabeth Gunn at Spinngdale in 1931.  The second to youngest William married Williamina Macgregor.

My grandfather was a David Ross from Kincardinshire who had a brother William Ross - history we know of, William had a daughter named Laura and a son Alexander, who died in the second world war.

David Ross was married to Maggie Cutt from Orkney Islands

Be interested to know if there may be a connection

Hello,

You may have read some of my postings for Kincardine and Fife which contain a huge amount of information on a number of families.

I am now happy to pass on a bit of information about a Mary Ross christened on 8th May, 1779 at Garvock, Kincardineshire and married William Birse on 11th November, 1804 at Strachan, Kincardineshire.

Mary's parents were John Ross, born about 1758 and married Mary Brechin on 3rd August, 1778, at Marykirk, Kincardineshire.

You may also be interested in the marriage of Robert Ross to Jean Brechin on 25th June, 1761 at Marykirk, Kincardineshire.

Whilst researching my ancestors, I have come across quite a lot of connections with the Ross's in Kincardineshire. AS I mentioned, Mary Ross married William Birse of Strachan, Kincardineshire and he was the father of Anne or Annie Birse who married William Hepburn about 1853 in the little town of Leslie in Fife. William Hepburn was the ancestor of my Grandmother, Elizabeth Hepburn who married William Livingstone in Cowdenbeath Fife.

I would be interested to know if your Grandfather David Ross is the same person as my Grandfather.
My David was born in 1878, parents John and Elizabeth ,older brother William.
David married Margaret (Maggie) Cutt in 1901, they had William Gilbert Ross in 1901. Maggie died in 1910 and David remarried in 1921 in Brechin, he died the same year.

Hi Ester,

You seem to have got that a wee bit wrong. My grandfather was William Livingstone - not a Ross! I would need quite a bit more information from you before I could take your enquiry any further. Thanks for the posting, and welcome to RootsChat.

Best wishes to you and yours.

Tom.

Tom, I think Ester is asking this question of gil ross .... ;)
They appear to have a common ancestor.

Thanks for that Russkie and sorry, Ester. It was simply that your query followed on to my posting.

Best wishes,  Tom.

Hello Marion,

Welcome to RootsChat!  Ditto gil and ester!

Are you trying to trace further backwards or to find living relatives?

You mention that William ROSS married Margaret MUNRO in 1877 - was that in Scotland?  If so, you could (if you haven't already done so) download their marriage certificate from ScotlandsPeople (a pay per view site - but charges are reasonable).  It is at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Scottish certificates are very informative - you should find on a statutory marriage certificate, for each of the bride and groom, the name and occupation of the father and the name and maiden surname of the mother.

There is good advice about using Scotlandspeople 'stickied' at the top of the Scotland General board.

I made a post which might be useful recently.  It is at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,280061.msg1982196.html#msg1982196

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask!

Regards,

JAP

Hello Marian.
The ScotlandsPeople index of marriages has a William Ross marrying a Margaret Munro in 1877 at Alness, Ross and Cromarty.
