Sidney SWIFT of Langhtwaite
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 18:38 BST (UK) »
Can anyone check the parish records for Wright SWIFT and Sidney/Sydney SWIFT born in Langthwaite or Linthwaite or Golcar in Yorkshire.  The 1841 census says they were born around 1822 but other dates in the family have been inaccurate so they could have been born a few years either side. James and Hannah SWIFT may be their parents.  There was only one Wright Swift living at the time so if you find one that will be him.  I'm putting this request in North Riding and East Riding.  They left for Australia before the 1951 census. Thanks

Well, the 1861 census shows a Wright Smith aged 40 born Golcar  :-\ :-\

I've checked the Almondbury transcripts but can't find a baptism.

Thanks Brer & Tati,

Wright Swift is the same family.  The family is in Dukinfield, Stockport, Cheshire in the 1941 Census.
James 45
Jane 40
Mary 25
John 20
Wright 20
Sydney 15
David 15
Iphriam 15
James 5
Jane 1

Later census records say they were mostly from Golcar.
I've found births for Mary 1815, John 1816, & Ephraim 1826 in Slaithwaite and a David in 1818 who appears to have died in Slaithwaite 1838.  But I can't find Wright, Sydney and David.  Family stories say that Sydney and David were cousins so until I can find Sydney/Sidney I don't know if James was his father.  James was originally married to Hannah in 1814 in Slaithwaite and Hannah died there in 1826.

Thanks for checking the transcripts Claire.  They must have moved somewhere else for a few years.  If they were born in Golcar could they have been christened somewhere else besides Slaithwaite?

Here's the children with full details in case you've not got them -

Mary - 26/03/1815 - James and Hannah - Linthwaite - Clothier

John - 01/12/1816 - James and Hannah - Hoyle House Clough - Clothier

Rachel - 20/09/1818  - James and Hannah - Hoyle House Clough - Clothier

Ephriam - 12/04/1826 - James and Hannah - Hill Top Golcar - Clothier

It's strange that all the children are not Christened there...hmmm.

I'll send you a PM

~ Claire

Thanks Claire,

What an amazing co-incidence about Dukinfield.  Until a few weeks ago I had never heard of it. Coincidences seem to happen a lot in family research don't they.

The extra information you sent is very helpful as I only had the dates.  And Rachel is a completely new person.  Maybe Sidney and David were relatives who just happened to be staying on the night of the 1841 Census and they were born somewhere completely different to Golcar.

Do your transcripts go back as far as the father James Swift who was born about 1797?  Maybe if I can piece together James and his siblings I can find some of them in later censuses to give me a clue where to look.

I've posted a request on Steve Wikwams site but havent had a reply yet.

They go back to 1685 :)  There's only 2 James SWIFTs Christened about that time -

James SWIFT
12/12/1799
Father James
Mother Hannah
Abode Lingards Lane, Lingards

James SWIFT
30/09/1794
Father John
Abode Wellhouse, Golcar

Hi Claire,

I think it must be James born 1794 as he married in 1814.
James called his first son John, which is perhaps an extra clue.

If the records go back to 1685 I'm thinking it would be worth investing in the CD or transcripts for Slaithwaite and Huddersfield so I can try and piece the family together.

Thanks for your help.
