Please help identify Scot in Germany in WW2
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 07:01 BST (UK) »
I am wondering about Scottish service personal who may have been in Germany in the Second World War. I'm trying to identify someone in a photo I've had for many years but I don't have a name. There is some pencil writing on the bottom right corner of the photo mount which says Tasma Studios Woolwich or Westwick. The man is wearing a heavy woollen looking coat with a collar and large breast pockets with  scalloped flaps. The jacket is open at the neck exposing a shirt and dark  tie. The back of the photo mount has Walsh written on it in blacklead pencil.
Any ideas that may help me put a bigger picture around this photo would be greatly appreciated.
cheers from Peggle.

Hi Peggle  :)

I have posted a message on your other thread (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,371263.0.html) re. the photographer - can't help with the uniform though I'm afraid.  There are plenty of experts on this board who I'm sure will be able to give you some information  :)

Cheers

Well....It's possibly post autumn 1944, but who can tell with RAF kit!! Taken in Woolwich...

Looks remarkably like a RAF BD uniform...Suit, Aircrew...But the devil is in the detail...Which we can't see...The trouser pocket!!!!
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Thankyou Scrimnet,
but what does the BD mean? Can it be safe to say then, that this fellow was serving with the Airforce? Why is the jacket so plain, I wonder. The pocket is kind off scalloped on the flap and I've looked for this detail in numerous searches, trying to identify where it belongs but haven't had much success. I believe he was in Germany somewhere around 1945, 1946. There is so little that I know about him and would love to know more.
Kind regards from Peggle.

BD means Battledress....

The uniform is most deffo "Suit, Aircrew" to give it its "proper name"....Or after 1943, "War Service Dress"

Certainly RAF...

The shape of the pocket is peculiar to Suit, Aircrew....I'll find a pic laters...

Hi.  I've only just joined Rootschat so not sure how useful this information will be to you some 2 years on but Tasma Studios were definitely in Woolwich - full address being 26 Wellington Street, Woolwich SE18.  Wellington Street is still there - its where the town hall can be found.

Don't know if Greenwich Heritage Centre might have any records of where the records have been deposited (if they were ever kept) once the photographers went out of business.  Most photos have a reference number on the back and if you strike lucky can be found on records and the person identified (or at least the person who paid for the photo!).

Best of luck in your quest!

I've been given a possible name of John Matheson (not sure if this spelling is correct). He would have been near Hamburg, Germany around 1945/46. Would still like to find out more about the man in this photo.
Regards,Peggle.
