William and Philip EYRES Amesbury 1806-1815

In Amesbury Nov 15 1832 William Eyres (born abt 1806 Ames ) married a Jane Benger ( born abt 1806 Woodborough ) they had 5 Children. Unfortunately William died in Amesbury in 1847.

Jane then married a Philip Eyres (born abt 1815 Ames ) on July 19 1849 in Amesbury.

What I'm trying to find out is whether William or Philip were related, as they were born in the same place and had the same surname.

Any help would be gratefully received

Bit of a jump around the Amesbury records for this...............

As expected the 1832 marriage record gave no details of fathers for William Eyres and Jane Benger.
In 1849 they did - 19 Jul 1849 marriage of Philip Eyres, widower, son of Robert Eyres and Jane Eyres, widow, daughter of John Benger.

Unable to find an Amesbury baptism for Philip, which was no big deal, but there was a baptism 3 Jan 1802 William Eyres, son of William and Mary Eyres.   This was slightly earlier than thought but a burial record 29 Apr 1847 William Eyres, age 45, confirmed it.

Philip and William would appear not to be brothers but possibly cousins as these baptisms tend to suggest

20 May 1758 Robert Eyres, son of Robert and Elizabeth
25 May 1765 William Eyres, son of Robert and Elizabeth
2 Jan 1763 Philip Eyres, son of Robert and Elizabeth
It seems very neat but on second thoughts they could be a bit early.

I am descended from Philip Eyres and I had wondered the same thing. I know your post was a long time ago so you have probably done further work on this now. I think they are cousins:

Philip Baptised 04 May 1794 Amesbury son of Robert & Elizabeth nee Want
Robert Baptised date 20 May 1758 Amesbury son of Robert & Elizabeth nee Hicks

William Eyres Baptised 3 January 1802 Amesbury son of William and Mary
The bit I'm assuming is that the father William = William Baptised 25 May 1765 son of Robert & Elizabeth nee Hicks. I haven't been able to find William and Mary's marriage.

I've just ordered Philip's will; I don't suppose it will throw any further light on this question, but he married 3 times in the end. If you have any further info on the Eyres do let me know!

When I posted this I was following the Spencer line through Betsey Spencer who married William Eyres the son of William and Jane Eyres nee Benger.  From what I remember and re visiting my files I came to the same conclusions as yourself .

I couldn't find William and Mary's marriage either and so couldn't take it back any further. I got a lot further back with Philip and all his children wives etc but could never make the connection with William

As you say William born 1765 was certainly a candidate for investigation but again I never found any records to back it up .....

I now the answers are out there but will probably take a little more archive searching to find them .....good luck ... let me know if you find out any more I'd love to know
