Help finding my William Caines pre 1901 census
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 20:14 BST (UK) »
I've found a William Caines married to Catherine in the 1901 census living in Gloucestershire, Cheltenham, All Saints Parish.  His age is listed as 75, hers at 44.  I think this is my William, as his son Arthur would fit the correct age for my g-grandfather.

I cannot find a marriage certificate for William and Catherine, however.  Nor can I find a William Caines in the 1891 Census.  Judging by the age difference between William and Catherine I would think this to be a second marriage for William... though I'm not sure.

Can anyone help me find my William Caines, at least a marriage cert or a birth listing from c.1826.  From there I think I can find his father's name.

Thanks!

Hi KatieC,

I gather you have access to census? The family are at Cheltenham in 1891, reference RG12/2043 126 19 - William's age is 35!!

Very strange... haha he aged 40 years in a 10 year span!  Must be a transcription error... Thanks so much for the help.

If the 1891 census is correct then this could be him in 1871:
RG10/2667 51 11
St Pancras, Gloucestershire

Henry Caines, head, 47, Stonemason, b. Cheltenham
Louisa, wife, 48, b. Painswick
William, son, 15, Stonemason Labourer, b. Cheltenham
Louisa, dau, 6, scholar, b. do.

Sounds quite plausible to me, given the family are at Leckhampton (=the place stated as his birth place on the 1901 census) in 1861: RG9/1795 78 21 (different wife for Henry though)

And just in case you have trouble finding them in 1851 (I did!) the reference is HO107/1972 208 18
