Does anyone know of "Havannah, Tanfield, County Durham" ?
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hello

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a place/hamlet/village called Havannah

Havannah is in Tanfield, this is the place where my ancestors are recorded as living in the 1871 census.

I have tried googling but have found nothing.

Thank you very much in advance.

There is a places name index for Durham at http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces

There is a places name index for Durham

The Havannah shown on the place-name index is in the Parish of Washington Holy Trinity, not Tanfield

The Havannah in Tanfied is next to Louisa Terrace. In the 1881 Census there are only two houses.  RG11    Piece 4941    Folio 25    Page 47 Schedules 225 and 226

Also see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUR-NBL/2007-01/1168428704 - is this the same place again?

That is not the same Havannah :) The Tanfield Havannah in the 1881 Census is the schedule after Shield Row West Farm, which is preceeded by Oakeys Cottages.
Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a Post Code Search on DH9 8AN this will centre the map on the position of West Shield Row Farm. The 1894-1899 shows both Oakeys Cottages and the Farm,
Havannah is in that area. Unfortunately the description of the enumeration district is missing on Ancestry.
What is the 1871 Census reference?
There is also an Havannah in Kyo.

Right I have found it again, as I did before at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUR-NBL/2007-01/1168428704
It was between Beamish Street and Scott Street in Stanley which
used to be Front Street, before the bypass was built.
If you do a search at http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm on the Post Code DH9 0ST and go to the 1856-1865 map you will see Havannah. Sorry for the previous confusion, but I should have realised it is the same place.
