Does anyone know Dysart?
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 17:28 BST (UK) »
Hi, up until a few months ago I have to admit I had never heard of Dysart and then I discovered that this is where my husband's family come from.  OH is 72 in November and I thought I would try and get his tree organised for him with as much info as poss.
I would love to know if the two addresses listed on the census I have still exist.
1851 - Flesh Close, Dysart
1861 - Cross Wynd, Dysart
I have searched without success but hoped someone may have heard of them or have some info about them.
I know this is a longshot but these little details make history so much more interesting. Any information gratefully received.  Many thanks.

Hi Royd,

I had relatives living in Dysart from around the 1890s.  As it's now been swallowed up by Kirkcaldy, I found that Kirkcaldy Central Library were very helpful - I was trying to trace WW1 soldiers, but they might be able to help you.

Their contact details are www.fife.gov.uk - use the A-Z search towards the bottom of the page to look for libraries.

Best wishes

I don't think these streets exist anymore but the council should be able to tell you where they used to be or what they're called now.

Hi Ostler and Kirsty, thank you for getting back to me with this info.  The names I am particularly interested in are Taylor and Watson, closely followed by Smith, Leitch and Miller.  I am grateful for your time.  Thanks again.

Hi Royd,

My wife was born at Birrell Street Wynd, which is now Pathead Village and she remembers Flesh Wynd and Cross Wynd but she cant identify which was which, as there were about four Wynds connecting Commercial Street with Mid Street and then more Wynds connecting Mid Street to Nether Street.

She remembers the Wynd at the bottom of her street, it was called Two Legged Wynd until someone knocked one of the bollards down then it became One Legged Wynd. I think all Wynds were named by the community rather than the Council.

Ostler, your Marjory Hughes who married your Wlliam Kinnes in 1864 was a cousin of the Calmans' of Dundee which I see in Christine's interest
