tracing gt gt gt grandfathers birthplace

help please, is there anyway I can find out where my gtgtgt grandfather was born. I know he came to Glasgow between 1846 and 1849 with his wife and five children their names were Daniel McNeill wife  Mary Darroch children were William Daniel James Hannah and Rachel Daniels parents were Daniel McNeill  and Rachel Luke Marys parents were James Darroch and Jane Keane.thanks any help would be appreciated.  :-\

To find the family in Ireland you need to know both their religion (for church records) and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county or Ireland). McNeill is a very common surname, especially in Ulster and Mary's surname could be Darrah, Darragh, etc.

thanks aghadowey.I know their religion but unfortunately not the parish.I did wonder if perhaps the family asked for help when they got here.'not sure where I would get that kind of information though may have hit a brick wall  :)

Just in case it causes some confusion parishes is Ireland aren't quite the same as in Scotland.
Civil parishes are made up of a group of townlands and then a group of civil parishes together make up a barony. Church of Ireland (the Established Church) generally had a parish church for each parish.
Then there are the religious parishes of the Catholic Church. There aren't the same names or areas as civil parishes. Those church records would be for the parish.

I didn,t know that I know the family was protestant so I suppose thats a start Daniels mothers surname is unusual too so that might help. I only found out recenly the family came from Ireland my dad had always told me they came form Gigha.have been reading up a lot about families coming over to Glasgow from Ireland and it was very hard for them.Thanks again aghadowey appreciated :)

Sorry but Darragh is not that unusual a surname here in Ulster.

If you go to www.familysearch.org, type in 'Luke' and select Ireland, then search lots of people with that surname in Ireland are listed so suspet it's not that rare either.

thanks again aghadowey will try that I know its unlikely  I will find them but worth a try,Im chuffed at finding Irish ancesters would love to find out more about them so wont give up easily thanks a million though I am grateful for youre help without people like youreself I wouldnt know where to start :)
