Hi Sammybill,

Are you looking for her birth registration, or census information, if census, which do you already have?

Seaham has a community website you may find helpful:

Hi Sammybill,

looking for Mary Ellen Brown born 1855/7

I see that she was just called Ellen on the 1861 census and that her mother Ellen was a Travelling Pedlar - it's possible that her birth may not have been registered ~ Durhamrecordsonline has a baptism for an Ellen Brown b. 1856 bapt 1857 in Seaham, but her parents were Michael and Mary Brown, and they don't have one for a Mary Ellen.

She's also just called Ellen on the 1871 census - I was wondering where in Yorkshire Rebecca was born, couldn't make the place out on 1861 census, but it's clear here - Bacup Lancashire, and I can't see her birth registration either!

Hi Barbara

I have Rebecca Browns birth cert born 1853 Bank Street Bacup. This is where I got the fathers name from as William Brown (Tailor) and mother Ellen Brown formerly Hewitt. The extra name Mary came from her marriage cert where she calls herself Mary Ellen Brown and calls herself Mary Ellen on the 1891 census after her marriage to Thomas Iley.
I also sent for a birth cert for a Mary Ellen Brown 1854 born in Witton  Co Durham but the fathers name is John Brown and interestingly also a Tailor and mother Ann Brown formerly Atkinson. I have wondered if Ellen was taken on by her uncle William and his wife after something happened to her real parents but have never been able to think of any way to prove or disprove this theory.
Any ideas ??

Thanks Sammybil
