Postal Superintendent, Liverpool: Alfred John WOLFE (1858 - 1938)
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 17:42 BST (UK) »
From 1871 to 1919 I have references to this family member being in the civil Service, specifically within the post office.

His hame was Alfred John WOLFE (born 1858 Liverpool; died 1938 Liverpool).
He lived in Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

In the 1871 and 1881 census he is listed as civil service; in 1891 census he is a post office telegraphist (as was his wife Alice Watkins Walmsley). In May 1919, his son's marriage certificate lists him as a Postal Superintendent.

I would LOVE to find any information about Alfred, his career, or that of his wife Alice...can anyone help?!

Susie,

You could also try The Royal Mail Archive at Freeling House, Phoenix Place, London WC1X.  They keep staff records and it is possible there might be some mention there.  Tel No:  020 7239 2570 or

Hi having looked through a lot of directories in the 1870 & 80’s not one Alfred did I find.  In 1878 the only one than might be related but no occupation given. Was Robert Wolfe of 44 Admiral Street T/Park. It wasn’t till I got to1890 That Alfred turned up

Woolfe Alfred J. Telegraphist 4 Mulliner Street, Earl Road EST
1892 no
1893 Wolfe Alfred J 31 Barrington Road, Smithdown Road
1897                            same address
Thought I would take this just in case 1872 John Wolfe Officer in customs 21 Everton Village
I went back to the beginning again to re-check the spelling of Woolfe in case I missed him
I hadn’t. If as you say Alfred lived all his life in Liverpool, the only thing I can think of as to why he isn’t in the directories before 1890 is that he was working away.Dont forget that these are postal addresses for the post office. He may have moved between the censuses. I didn’t have time to go past 1897, but if you me to let me know
