Craig & Craig, Antrim
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 09:14 BST (UK) »
John CRAIG (shoemaker) m. Roseann CRAIG circa 1800, Antrim.  Presbyterian.

Am trying to ascertain from where in Antrim this family originated.

Has anyone come across John and Roseann please?
Thanks.

Craig is a very common surname in County Antrim. Antrim could refer to the county, the town ot the area around the town of Antrim. To trace this family in Ireland you need to know where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county). Once you have a location you can start searching for church records (if they exist). Some Presbyterian records go back to 1800s but many do not. Also, Presbyterian churches usually didn't keep burial records- if you are lucky there might be a headstone or names for the grave plots in the church records. Many Presbyterians in 1800s were buried in Parish (Church of Ireland) burying grounds and the rectors didn't always record Presbyterian burials in the burial register.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello Robbie,

You might strike lucky by having a look at the directories on Mary Lennon's website. www.lennonwylie.co.uk

1843 Belfast / Ulster Street Directory
Craig, James Scott, shoe maker, 11 John Street, Belfast

I have a Craig problem too. Matty Weir bc 1834,married ??? Craig c1852/56. (probably in Belfast)She was a widow when she married Joseph Black in 1858 at Malone Pres Church,Belfast. (Matty on marr. cert. Martha on reg'n of last 2 children) The first child was b 1857 and was possibly the child of Matty and ?? Craig, but reared as Black, and named as Jane Black when she married James Irwin in 1881.Matty and Joseph's witnesses were Margaret Weir and Roseanne Peacock. Was she MRS Peacock - possibly nee Craig.? Any help appreciated. Agnetta

Hi.
My Great Grandmother was Margaret Craig, born abt 1862.  Her father was Robert.  Margaret married John Meeke on the 28th Feb 1891 at Ahoghill, Co Antrim 1st Presbyterian Church.  I believe these Craigs came from the Aughterclooney area.  I have several photos of Craig graves in 1st Ahoghill.

:o Wow thank you so much.  Yes its them.  This has opened up loads of blanks in my family research given I can search for other families in the Co Antrim area.  Thank you again for being so helpful.
