look up request for Sarah (née Francis?) and Samuel Cowdell, Saint Chad
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 00:02 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information regarding my ancestor Sarah (née Francis?) b,. around 1809 in Alberbury, who married Samuel Cowdell (b. 1810 Shrewsbury)  (although one census record says Marston, Montgomeryshire).  Their children and grandchildren (and great-grandchildren all the way down to today) often have the middle name Francis, so I think that Sarah's  maiden name could have been Francis.

I'd like to know what Sarah's maiden name was, and who both of their parents were. Samuel was a "Journeyman Painter" (or Printer?) and Sarah was a "laundress".

Only two children are reported on the censuses (censii?) -- John Francis Cowdell, b. 1834,  Margaret Cowdell b 1838, so the marriage of Samuel and Sarah Cowdell was  probably on or before 1834.

Cannot find anything on IGI for parents, possibly some may have parish records and have a look for you.

The link given above  www.familysearch.org  is very useful for family history. Extracted records (those with batch numbers) can be trusted, as they are mainly from church records.

Submitted entries are by individuals and/or LDS, they cannot be trusted, because of possible errors, so need to be verified with other records.

There is also a look up exchange for Salop, possibly Samuel is in some of the directories, or you my get some more parish info, as they have St Chads, not sure what else is there.

Hope this helps  :)

Dear Cas, this is incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for these resources.  I was able to find entries on the family look up site you mentioned for Turners in "Allerbury" -- a Sarah is born in 1802 -- a lot earlier than I expected.  I was a bit shocked to see Cowdell as "Cowdale" but that partly explains why I have had so little luck searching so far.

Thank you very very much.

In the 1841 census they are down as 'Cowdale'  It looks like Samuel's mother is Margaret, as she is head.  His occ. is J' (journeyman) Painter.

You also may want to correct your title...incase a possible connection spots it on the net.  You have 'Thomas' in the title, and 'Samuel' in the body of your message.

On the IGI there are bapts for a Thomas in the same area.

Happy hunting  :)

Found this, but Sarah seems on census to give her age around 1806

Shropshire: Alberbury - Parish Register, Hereford Diocese
Volume 7.
Baptism 17 Jan 1802 Sarah, illegitimate d. of Mary Turner.

Also there are a lot of submitted entries on IGI that cannot be trusted, as they may be error.

That's very ood -- the same day in the same place is also another record for Sarah born to Elizabeth and John Turner. How can you tell which entries are submitted and which are extracted?

Thans for noticing my "Thomas" error. I have it fixed in my mind there is a Thomas in the mix. I'm really happy that you found the "Cowdales" on the 1841 census. The 1841 Cowdells have   long eluded me now we know why.

I've found only one Samuel Cowdell (and no Samuel Cowdales), christened in Manafon Wales, 1816. Maybe he wasn't christened for a few years after birth? The 1851 census says he was born in "Marston, Montgomeryshire" -- Marston, Montgomery is in Derbyshire, too far away, but Montgomeryshire makes sense -- I guess Manafon could sound like "Marston" with a lisp (with a lifthp)
