Can anyone date this picture please?
« on: Wednesday 13 August 08 19:30 BST (UK) »
This picture is of some unknown ancestors and I would like to narrow it down.  On the back is the simple note "Mrs Hawley"  So am not sure if that refers to one of the children or to the mother.  A date on the photo would help if anyone has some thoughts I would be most appreciative.

Also attaching a second photo - is there someone out there that can comment on whether the two gentlemen are the same individual?  Is the second photo a younger version of the man next to the wagon on the first photo?  The back of this photo has some writing on it but it has been obscured with age and dirt and is now barely noticeable and not readable at all.  Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks much!
Karen

Hello Karen, and welcome to Rootschat!

It's certainly possible that the men are the same...there is a great deal of resemblance. About the writing on the back...if you scan the back at a high resolution (300-600 dpi) and post it, we might be able to make out the words...there is an amazing amount of talent on this board and some clever photo software.

Cheers,
China

Thanks for the welcome.  This looks like an awesome site.  Can't wait to explore!

Here is the back of the picture - not sure of the resolution - let me know if I need to rescan.  Thanks for your help.

Sincerely
Karen

I've looked at this half a dozen times & still unsure of a date but here goes.
The 1st. photo has the lady bare armed so post WW1 but still has the narrow
waisted skirt tight at the hips popular until the twenties.
The 2nd. has a man in ordinary day clothes with a workshirt. You can see there
is no stiffening in the collar so again 1920's I think, but as China said there is a
likeness between the 2 men.
I'm waiting to be shot down.

Karen, why don't you post the back view of the photo on a separate thread...a lot of restorers don't revisit an old one. Specify in the title exactly what you need (help with reading handwriting or something)...maybe it will attract a bit more attention.

You will have to rename the file in order to post it again...just adding a letter or number will do.

Thanks Jim and China for all your efforts and advise.

I was surprised but I think it narrows it to being only one person - which is a good thing.  If the pic is from around the time you are saying it is Ethel Hawley, wife of Francis Marion Hawley.  She was born in 1875 and died in the flu epidemic in Saskatchewan in 1920.  Her husband was a farmer who homesteaded in northern Saskatchewan in 1910.

I had originally thought the picture might be of Francis' mother Margaret Hawley but she died in 1871 so obviously cannot be her.  I sure appreciate your thoughts.  Thanks again.

Sincerely,
Karen
