I am looking for any information at all about Richard Spiers during his time in Australa.
What I know so far is:
He was from Alton, Hampshire, England and was baptised in 1797.
He was a widower with 5 children.
He stole a pig from Charles Trimmer, Esquire, an attorney, sometime in October, 1834.
He was committed on April 11th, 1836, tried at Southampton 2nd Quarter assizes on Jun 28th, 1836 and was sentenced to 7 years transportation.
Some of his children were sent to Alton Workhouse and remained in England.
He sailed from Portsmouth on the Mangles on  18th March, 1837
He arrived in Sydney on 10th July, 1837, (presumably at Port Jackson?)
I have a photocopy of his ticket of leave, No. 42/1167 Date - 19th April 1842.  Prisoner No. -37/1220. Ship-  Mangles '7', Master - Carr, Year - 1837, Place of Trial - Southampton, Date of Trial - 28th June, 1836, Sentence - 7 years, Allowed to remain in the district of Port Stephens. On recommendation of - initials (illegible) dated 1841.
What other details are there about him?
Where was he sent on arrival? Did he have an assigned Master?
Does he appear in the 1837 Muster of Convicts?
What did he do in Port Stephens?
Did he remarry?
What did he do when his sentence had finished?
When and where did he die?
Where was he buried?
There seems to be a discrepancy over the number after Mangles. On the Ticket of Leave, it is '7', but many websites name it as '8' for 1837, Sydney.
Richard is my gt gt gt grandfather. I am descended from one of the children left in the Workhouse. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated as the Convicts Anthology CD is not available to me in the UK.

His parents were Richard and Sophia.
The name Spiers is often mis-transcribed, by the way. It can be pronounced Spires or Spears. But I have seen it badly transcribed as Spins!

As for Richard's children, I can trace 4 of the 5 on the England census returns, but there is a Richard Spiers junior, baptised in 1821, who I can't find. He was the oldest child and would have been 16 when his father was transported. I wondered if the death you found might be Richard junior ....

I want to know if there is any more convict-related paperwork other than the ticket of leave I already have. I am sure that prisoner number could be crucial, but have found nothing else so far.  I know that there is a CD Anthology of Port Jackson Convicts, available only in Australia, so I am hoping someone has a copy and can find out more from that.

I found Richard Spiers on 1837 Convict muster on the ancestry site.
It is transcribed as Rd Spins but someone has posted a correction
saying it is their 3xg grandfather.  You perhaps?

Richard Spiers aged 39
Trial place & year....Southhampton, 1836
Sentence....7 years
Ticket of Leave no. 42/1167
Ship....'Mangles'  departed Portsmouth and arrived Port Jackson 10/7/1837
The number eight in brackets after the name Mangles, refers to the number of voyages made by that ship into Port Jackson...so far

Not on the Assignment Register
Not on Conditional Pardons or Recommendations
Not on Deaths
