linconshire parish- Carter/Bird
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 15:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find some people who do not exist. - I cannot locate them on any census but believe they may lived in Grimsby.

I am looking for either a birth/ baptism  for George Carter born in Great Grimsby c1842.
or his Parents John Carter and Mary Ann Bird. John was a seaman. they would have married prior to 1842 (I hope)

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it I know it is a bit needle in a haystack.

Many Thanks

Saphy

Hi Saphy,

When you say they don't exist, you mean you haven't found them yet on a census - you must know some details to be looking for them!  :)

If John was a seaman, you may only find Mary with son George, or even with grandparents, there may have been a second marriage so he might be under a different surname.

Did you get their names from George's marriage certificate?  How do you know he was born in Great Grimsby, does that come from a census after his marriage?  If you can put all the information you have, every little will help trace them

Hi Barbara,

I have seen George's Marriage certificate.

George Carter Married Joan Mowat on the 20th August 1865 in Pierwall Westry the orkney islands.

on the record his residence is listed as being Great Grimsby. His Parents are recorded as John Carter and Mary Ann Bird. Dad is a Seaman and neither is listed as being deceased.

George carter died on the 22nd of November 1867 aged 25 years, he was lost at sea from the fishing smack the empress which sailed from the port of Grimsby.

he left Joan and 2 children George Sinclair Carter and Mary Elizabeth Carter. Joan was pregnant with Mary When he died. By the 1871 census Joan had remarried and was living in Orkney with her new husband.

Today i have also been trying to find a record of Gerges death with no luck. I have tried find my past ( 1837 online) but with no luck. We ave also tried Scotlands people to see if his death was recorded in scotland but he does not show there either- he was lost at the dogger bank.

feeling very stuck- Saphy.

Hi Ricky,

thank you very much for finding that.

Is anyone able to check the parish registers to see if their is a baptism for that George Carter. There is not one predominant family religion so could be any denomination.

Hi Saphy
I too am trying to find the Carter Bird connection, I have been told that both John and Mary Ann were from Jersey in the Channel Isles. I am new to this but have a tree from John and Mary Ann until the present day if you are interested. Any information you find would be appreciated.
Best regards
Sinclair

Hi
Very excited to find this on here.
Joan Mowat and George Carter were my great great grandparents.
Joan was pregnant with my great grandmother when George Carter was lost. She returned home to Pierowall, Westray, Orkney with son George and daughter Mary Elizabeth was born there in 1868.
There are lots of us, as Mary Elizabeth had 13 of a family, but we know nothing of the Carter history and would be very interested to find out more about them.
Any information welcome!
Thanks
