Cowbridge
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 08:24 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on my grandfather Trevor Preece born 13 October 1882, Cowbridge, mother Mary Preece daughter of John Preece, Blacksmith.  On his birth certificate the space for the name of the father is blank.  I was wondering if there is anyway I could possible trace who his father was.  Living in Coventry and, unable to drive it makes it difficult for me to visit the Local History Office.

PS My grandfather was a stylish cricketer who played for Glamorgan and a few of the local Cowbridge teams.  He was a well respected head groundsman at Cardiff Arms Park in the 1930's.

Regards

Hi Bob, Welcome to Rootschat  :)

With him having same name as his mother looks like she was unmarried at the time of his birth.  If unmarried or father was not present at registration, he would, most often,  not be included, even if parents were still possibly 'together'

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/births.htm

Do you know anything else about Mary post birth, did she marry, have any more children?  Have you tried his marriage cert to see if father is named?  Possibly he knew of him.

I have found him in 1901, with grandparents,  if you want details, cannot locate him in 1891 at mo.  His grandfather, John Preece is named in most of the directories in Cowbridge as blacksmith.

Also found a few online links relating to his time as a Cricketer etc, also some info on his son, which you prob have.

Some things we never get to find out, but, think his marriage cert, may or may not hold a clue?  :-\

Cas

Re my grandfather Trevor Preece, I do have his wedding certificate and the father is named as John Preece, Locomotive Engine Driver.  The date of his marriage certificate was 1908, married in Llansaintffraid, Montgomery and Denbigh.  I can only assume he was adopted by his grandfather (John Preece) who was Mary's father.  I really don't know whether Mary had any more children or if she did ever get married.  My mother seems to think that she was living in Cardiff around 1946, the year of my birth.

Many thanks for your info.

There are quite a few marriages for Mary Preece post 1882...without family info it is difficult to pinpoint if she married or had further children.

Seems there is no other source, except possibly family info, that may shed light on your g grandfather  :-\

Best wishes, good luck with your future research.

Have you tried searching for his christening/baptism record These often show the father (or alleged father) where a child is illegitimate.
Glamorgan FHS have produced a transcription of the records for Cowbridge, which you can purchase online.
Of course if they were non-conformist it will be more difficult.
