Hi Betty,

I'm not connected to any of yours or Billy's Andersons. I just happened to be another Anderson - only through marriage though!

Denny Cemetery wasn't established till the beginning of the 1880's, so unless any of the stones were to mention someone buried elsewhere, you won't find anybody before this date. I can send you an index of all the Andersons mentioned on stones in Denny but this doesn't guarantee they're buried there. I've spent a good few years photographing and transcribing all the existing stones in Denny but there are plenty of graves without stones too as I'm sure you would have noticed!

You asked about other Denny Cemeteries, well . . . . . . .

1.
Broompark Churchyard, now the Broompark Centre, in Davies Row in Denny (behind the library - if you know where that is!)

2.
Denny Old Parish Churchyard, right on Denny Cross. (One stone only - Margaret Anderson, wife of James Thomson of Carronford, 1844)

3.
Dennyloanhead Churchyard, at Dennyloanhead , in the process of being re-developed. (One stone only - Agness Muirhead, wife of John Anderson, died 20th July 1875 aged 75)

4.
Dunipace Old Burial Ground, right in the centre of the Hills of Dunipace Cemetery on the road to Larbert. (No stones bearing the name Anderson)

All my information comes from existing legible stones, not from burial records and I must state that sometimes I have to make a guess at dates etc., so anything I've transcribed must be verified.

Denny Library has a copy of the complete index of the stones which I handed in but I think it's kept 'through the back' and you have to specifically ask for it!  :)

Anne

P.S. I haven't had the chance to go into Falkirk Library yet but it's on my 'to-do' list.

Popping up again!!

Betty - if Billy hasn't already sent you a copy of the photo of the above family's stone, let me know and I'll send you a copy.

I can tell you (pretty much) exactly where it is if you want to go and visit. My photo isn't partcularly good but it would give you a indication of what you'd be looking for.

Anne.

P.S. I started my marathon task when I heard the new High School was being built next door. Not that I think any of the kids would ever imagine 'dogging-it' in the graveyard or pitting their strength against the stones  >:(

Hi Anne,
If you could put the Anderson  gravestone on this thread that would be great.
Do you also have a photo of James Anderson's grave stone which is located around the corner on the right hand side from William and Helen's stone, many thanks Billy.

Hi everybody,

In answer to Billy's request, below is a copy of the photograph bearing the following MI:

In memory of WILLIAM ANDERSON who died at East Borland 25th March 1903 aged 84 years
HELEN MILLER his wife died 17th May 1906 aged 87 years
JANET ANDERSON their daughter
MARGARET FLEMING died 29th December 1906 wife of
JOHN ANDERSON who died 29th March 1915 aged 71 years

The other stone you mentioned Billy ..... I'd need a wee bit more info (dates or other people) as there are sooooo many Andersons in Denny, I don't know which stone it would be. I haven't a clue of Lair Numbers so that wouldn't help.

Anne

Hi All, Haven't been on for a good few days, because had hubs home. There's always someone to throw a spanner in your works - and generally its him!! Never mind, onwards and upwards!!
Anyhoo, thanks Anne for all your info on the Denny graves! What a minefield of information you are!! I shall have a wee wander through and see who I bump into when i'm up there. :)
Thanks also to you Billy for the lairs at Denny. Should make it a tad easier to find the old rellys!! I still haven't made it back to Kilsyth yet, but hopefully soon. Anne, the way the weather has been today, you could have spent all morning in the library at Falkirk, but I'm sure there will be full days of rain to come in the near future, so best hang off 'til then and make it worth your while!!

Betty.

Mystery solved!!   ;D

It was indeed Smith Anderson Snr. who was Provost of Kilsyth.

Falkirk Herald, 23rd June 1900. (In the Districts Section, Kilsyth)

"Death of an Ex-Provost

On Saturday afternoon the grave closed over the remains of Mr. Smith Anderson, who at one time was Provost of the burgh. Nearly thirty years ago Mr. Anderson came into the district, and during that time he has been more or less identified with the public work of the town. He was a member of the old Parochial Boards and Parish Council in succession, also of the Burgh School Board and Police Commission, in all of which he took his full share of the work and devoted much time in seeing to the carrying out of the various duties relegated to him. A more indefatiguable and hard-working member no body of men could seek to have better and his colleagure in the Commission recognised his labours by conferring on him the highest honour they had it in their power to bestow. His funeral was largely attended by the public men of the town."

He died on 14th June 1900 aged 74 at High Craigends, Kilesyth (a Thursday) and was buried a days later on 16th June 1900 (a Saturday).

I would imagine the local Kilsyth paper has a bit more than the Herald has. I photocopied the article and if any of you want a copy, I can scan it and send it on, so please send me your addresses by PM.

I downloaded 2 x Smith Anderson Death certs from SP, one for the above man and the other for a Smith Anderson, Farm Labourer who died 8th January 1929 aged 61 at Larbert, usual residence Shielwells Farm, Carronbridge. Son of William & Helen Anderson (nee Miller), so the same offer goes for either/both of those.
