Highgate Cemetery
« on: Monday 11 August 08 01:50 BST (UK) »
Hi there from sunny Queensland, Australia :)

Is there any kind soul who would be prepared to visit Highgate Cemetery for me and look at some graves and either make notes or send me a photo??

Hoping someone will help

Cheers

Have you looked on RAOGK site to see if there is a volunteer there?

No doubt you've seen this Gillie;
http://highgate-cemetery.org/index.asp

Looks like you have to pay to go into the cemetery  :o (never seen a charge for a cemetery visit anywhere else  :o). Looks like they'll do searches for you for £10 (!) .... doubt that will include a photo.

You have to pay for everything in London these days ... can kindof understand it in this case, as there are historically significant graves and hopefully (!) this money will go towards their upkeep.

Hope someone who's making a trip can help find your graves.

Thank you Charlotte and Ruskie for replying to my request.

Yes, I have seen they charge 10 pounds and Im happy to pay that, but being able to do a direct deposit or pay via Paypal would make things so much easier as I live out in the country and it takes a while to just get to a bank to buy some money and then hope that it reaches its destination and not go missing in the mail.

Cheers

Wish I'd gone when I lived in London  :-\. I don't recall an admission charge last time I looked at that site a couple of years ago.  And you can't even take your tripod if you pay the entry fee!!!

(Previously free things you now have to pay an entry fee ... St Pauls, Westminster Abbey are at least £10 per adult, just to mention two). I think the V&A is about the only free place left in London!).

Wonder what the charge is if you want a photo? I reckon you'll have to double that £10 to £20 and you'll have to pay per photo of each grave.  :-\

They don't make it easy if they ask you to post off an sae and the money. I'm sure they'd make more money if they advanced into the digital age as the snail mail route must put a lot of people off. I believe it's manned/run by volunteers but you'd think that they'd have got their act together enough to offer email/paypal/credit card transactions/ and sending of digital photos ....

Someone might still come to your rescue Gillie.

Hello there,

I was in Highgate cemetery yesterday on a day trip to London from Staffordshire in my second attempt to locate my greatgrandparent grave. Am happy to say I did find it this time having previously paid the £10 search fee and also with the very kind help of a volunteer.
There is an entrance fee of £4 (FOHC is a charity and it is a huge cemetery to maintain) but if you register to become a Friend of the cemetery and you have a family member buried there you are given a family pass which entitles you and your family to free entry.
I realise this would be difficult for you - how frustrating. I do know records of burials are held in Camden Archives. Good luck!

Hi All,

There's a new forum devoted to Highgate Cemetery I thought I'd post a link to, which invites people to post about their experiences there, and also to post stories about the "permanent residents"... it would also be a good place to talk about the sorts of frustrations people have experienced thanks to the Friends' reluctance to embrace C20 (let alone C21) technology  >:(  But with any luck things will soon be changing on that front  :) .

Here it is http://www.highgatecemetery-tellingtales.co.uk/index2.htm
