davies, blaenavon
« on: Sunday 10 August 08 22:01 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help. My Great grandmother Emma, was married to Thomas Davies in Bedwelty 1876. According to multiple census listings Thomas was born in Blaenavon approx. 1835. I have ordered their marriage certificate hoping it will tell me who Emma was. I'd like to find Thomas's family as well. My Grandfather, james, listed himself on his marriage certificate as James Davies-Powell, making me think that Emma was born a Powell. Also any information why Thomas (a coalminer) would have moved to Yorkshire in the 1880's. Any information would be great!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

With a surname like Davies in Wales - it may be as well to wait for the marriage certificate to arrive so we know who their respective fathers were - particularly as Emma was also surname Davies

I was in Blaenavon a few weeks ago - it has a world heritage site and is very interesting.  We spent far longer there than we had intended as I "went down the pit" on the guided tour

A very humbling experience when you realise the conditions the miners worked in

Pro e-mailed me that they are not sending it because the brides name is not Emma on the one I ordered........very frustrating. So now I'm looking for a marriage record again. Not really sure what Emma's maiden name wasbut seeing how as my grandfather ended up with the last name of Davies-Powell I'm guessing that she was a Powell. I think he may have been born out of wedlock.....It's all very confusing :-\ :-\

You need a copy of your grandfathers birth cert.  Even if he was illegitimate - it will give Emma's full name on the cert

I have received a later marraige certificate for Emma and her maiden name was lucas. So I am looking for a marriege between Emma Lucas and a Mr. Davies. I have discovered that Emma's brother Henry Lucas had already moved to Glamorganshire in 1871 shortly after that Emma's sister and brother in law, Jane and Stephen Sanger moved to Monmouthshire. In 1871 Emma was staying in her sister's household, so I am guessing when they moved to Wales she moved with them.
On the 1881 census in Monmouth, Emma is listed as Emma Davies, married to a colaminer but she is a lodger and not married to Thomas Davies or George Davies also listed as boarders in the same house. I cannot find a marriege for Emma. Anyone have any suggestions?
