Can anyone help with Bonallie family Fife
« on: Sunday 10 August 08 19:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

My family came from Dysart Fife and were known as Bonallie, Bonello etc, I have a massive family tree of Bonallies going back to the 1500's but I cannot tie it to my 3 x great grandfather William Bonello who was a shoemaker in Gallatown and his wife Elizabeth, they married in Dysart Fife in 1816, my 2 x great grandfather Alexander  Bonallie was born in Dysart, checking through the internet I came across this site and the following info, if anyone can help particularly if they have access to the 2 pages of info that could possibly give me the missing info as there is a reference to 2 Family trees.

Hi Norrie

Many thanks for your info, I'm sure that these Bonallie's will tie in with my family tree, my 2 x great grandfather Alexander is listed on the mariners site as being born in Kirkcaldy, even though his birth is recorded in Dysart, so although I'm not very good on Scottish geography it would seem that the areas are close by and many of the family remained around Fife.  I've been told by the various relations that the Bonallie's  were strict Presbytarians and are mentioned in the Bonallie/Impey papers relating to Bonnie Prince Charlie, but that's only a rumour, so hopefully I won't be prosecuted for treason ;D

Hi scruffypup,

You mention strict Presbyterians - but this could mean that they belonged to any one of a number of churches.

You might find the following of interest:
http://website.lineone.net/~davghalgh/churchhistory.html

It has a diagram of all the Presbyterian churches - there were lots of breakaways from the (Presbyterian) established Church of Scotland.

Regards,

JAP

Hi Jap

All I know is that my cousin Joe was told by his father that legend had it that the Bonallie's were nicknamed "The Undertakers" due to the fact that they under took to swear allegiance to Bonnie Prince Charlie.  The strict Presbytarians came about from my grandfather marrying a devout catholic and being cut off from the family, there does seem to be an awful lot of info that my father and his 3 brothers took to their graves unfortunately, thankfully my late Uncle Joe passed on one or two clues to his son Joe before dying but there are only a few scraps here and there very little to go on.

I have been searching Bonellas in Fife and have found quite alot, most of it is on this family tree

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/a/b/e/Fiona-Abernethy-Tayside/PDFGENEO2.pdf

Unfortunatly I haven't been able to connect it to my line. I have got as far as
Alexander Bonella (1846 ? probably Kirkcaldy) Farmer and Master Mealmiller.
died 1913 he was run over by a car.
he married Sophia McNab (1855 Saint Ninians, Stirling, Scotland) 1874 Gargunnock, Stirling, Scotland

If anyone has any information I would really appreciate if you could pass it on.

Hi Alistair

Best of luck your Bonella's.  I'm sorry I haven't any info on your Alexander, he's not on Familysearch as far as I can see.  By any chance are you related to Tom Harvey?  He's a Bonallie/Bonella descendant too.

I have just come across this old post. I hope that you have by now found your answers, but just in case, I think when you say "I have got as far as Alexander Bonella (1846 ? probably Kirkcaldy) Farmer and Master Mealmiller.", you may have the wrong Alexander!
The Alexander Bonella that married Isabella McNab was the son of Robert Bonella and Isabella Porter.

From the information you gave, I think that the Alexander you want is Alexander Bonello, born 19/09/1820 in Dysart to William Bonallie and Elizabeth Martin. He was a Master Mariner and had a child (John Lower) by Elzabeth Lower Sunderland in 1838. They married (his name recorded as Bonallie) in Sunderland in 1844 and had a further 5 children between then and her death in 1876. Alexander married Isabella Chase in 1878, but died 2 years later in 1880.

The only Julie I can find on that part of my tree is the daughter of James Bonallie and Mavis Lyon and is descended from Andrew's son Robert. If that is you, I am pretty sure I am giving you the correct ancestry. If this is old news, I apologise, but if it is not and you want more then please let me know.

Regards
Alan Mason
