Us navy - COMPLETED THANK YOU.
« on: Sunday 10 August 08 13:30 BST (UK) »
I have a photo of the grave of a relative and after her name it says;

CYN US Navy.

Can someone tell me what CYN means please?

Thank you,

What era are we talking about?

Best explanation is it's a rank abbrevaition of some sort.
YN = Yeoman according to the US Navy website:
http://www.navy.mil/navydata/navy_legacy_hr.asp?id=262

So Chief Yeoman perhaps?

Born in 1920 and died 1994.

She was a Chief Petty Officer WAVES, Department of Commisions, Washington DC.

I've searched the sites for abbreviations but all I came up with was Canyon!  ;D

Thank you.

CYN would be Chief Petty Officer Yeoman, a non-commissioned officer or at least an E7, i.e. 7 ranks up from a Seaman Recruit . . .
