Hi Carole,
You may  be correct,   I just don't know enough about how they did things back then.

We did send for Jane's birth certificate last week.

Honestly until 6 months ago we did not know we had a connection in Preston.  We thought we were from Ireland.
This is so new to us.  We have been searching not stop since then.  The US side has been easier to research.
We can't figure out what happened to, William the father.

If Margaret died and William the father wasn't around.........could the kids have gone to the cottages or work houses.  I have been reading about them and maybe I should be looking in that direction.
I know this is a mess.
Thanks again,
Billyc

This is purely a theory

I can't find a Margaret Kenny or a William Kenny (father) on the 1841 Lancashire census living in Preston

My guess is that Margaret was Irish

There is no trace of a William  Cummins or Peter Cummins in Preston in 1841 either although Cummins is not a particularly Irish surname.

There is a possibility that if the 1848 death is Margaret - perhaps the children were sent to Ireland to her relatives

Have you found any ship passenger records for sons Peter & William showing where they sailed from when they emigrated

Hi,
William came, we think, on October 14, 1867 City of Baltimore.
Peter came over on Sept 21, 1868 on the City of Boston.
He is listed as a mechanic or machinist.
We are sure on this one.  They were both naturalized.
The ship left Liverpool and they were in steerage.
They were living living together in Philadelphia on Howard Street.
William married 1868  and was a machinist.  He was married to Mary O'Neal.
Thanks again for trying,
BillyC

Hi Billy,

My family name is Cummins and YES it is Irish. Most of them seem to be concentrated around the Carlow area of Ireland.

Try the site  CarlowCummins at Rootsweb ( just google carlowcummins) and email the site and they are a great help.
Heaps of marriages, baptisms on there- although most is in Latin that far back- eg. Patricius= Patrick.

My Cummins ancestors emigrated to New Zealand 1864. Will check my records  and see if any connection to yours.

Hi BillyC!

Have you seen the 1841 census for WILLIAM CUNNINGS (sic) age 20, mechanic, on Bow Lane in Preston?  He was enumerated with MARTHA age 45 and five apparent siblings:  none of them born in the county.   Sound like yours, don't they?

No male near MARTHA's age was enumerated, but there is a death for PETER CUMMINS on FreeBMD:  Preston, SEP 1839.

Thank you, Thank you..........I am going to go back over my notes.
I recall seeing this, but being that I am a novice I skipped over Cunnings and Martha.
Again Thanks.

BillyC:

BTW per the 1851 and 1861 census, MARTHA and some of her children were born in Yorkshire.
