AVG is a good free anti virus program but it doesn't suit everybody
http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

You should also consider a firewall program Zonealarm is another long established free program
http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Firewall-Windows-2000-XP-/3000-10435_4-10039884.html

another to consider is a-squared an anti malware scanner program from
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

(the free one is about 3rd down the list)

I've used free versions of AVG anti-virus, and Zone Alarm, and also Ad-aware.
This latter picks up spyware etc., see at  http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Used all those for 5 years; no problems.  They are well regarded.  Have regular up-dates.             Gragareth.

Hi,
I've also used AVG (now 8) and Ad-aware for years and they have found problems and removed them.
I have also heard that 'avast' is very good.
