Mount Nebo, Ireland

Hello

I have received a birth certificate (from Australia) and the birthplace of the father is quoted as "Mount Nebo, Ireland".

I have done considerable amounts of searching and have failed to find it.  Could someone in Wexford please help?

http://www.cmcrp.net/Wexford/Landowner12.html  shows that Arthur Wyatt had a Mount Nebo address in 1870.

There is also reference here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/WEXFORD/2000-01/0948320503
which places it in the Gorey area.

This site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hunter_Gowan_II has some 'interesting' information about this chap who was born there.

If you 'google' it does come up in references.

Many thanks for your reply.  Given that information, I went on a hunt!  Info follows -

'Also in the district is the home of the notorious Hunter Gowan at Mount Nebo, as it was then called. It was later re-christened Mount Saint Benedict as the Benedictines founded a college there where many of our former politicians were educated. The college closed in the early 1920's'.

My grandfather was born there.  How interesting!

Mountnebo is a townland in County Wexford- 304 acres in the civil parish of Kilnahue (Barony and Poor Law Union of Gorey). The person in question was probably born in this townland rather than the house of Hunter Gowan which was also called Mount Nebo.
Griffith's Valuation (1850s) shows the following surnames for Mountnebo townland: Adams, Devitt, Kinsella, Loughlin, Carton, Johnston, Clare.

Hi all
 I wonder if anyone can help me I am trying to find a birth cerificate for my grandmother her name was Mary Gowan born about 1896.  All I know about her is that she was living in a place called Annagh Kilnahue when she got married in 1923 Her fathers name was John Gowan and some how not sure how but he is related to a John Hunter Gowan. of mount nebo. I don't know her mothers name and that is why I can't get a birth cartificate for her.
It would be great if anyone can help me find her

just an interesting note on the Gowans and Mount Nebo-

Miles Byrne of Monaseed was involved in 1798 Rebellion - as an old man he wrote his memoirs - see background

his book is in the National Library ... among other things, he describes the killing of his first cousin, Patrick Bruslaun (a connection of ours), by Patrick's near neighbour Hunter Gowan of Mount Nebo. .. When I was in the area last year, a woman I met talked about the incident as if it had happened last month.

Thank you I will check that out. I have an old aunt age 92 still living in moaseed but she is on my grandfathers side the (Dunnes) and when I went over to Wexford last year I went to see her. but she would not talk about the Gowans.  When I asked her about Mary Gowan she spit on the floor and said you know who she belong to? and that was was it. she would not even say the name I was so disapointed as she is the only one who could tell me so much more.  But I am not going to give up I will carry on looking.  Thank you very much I will see if I can get the book.
