Alice Wyatt - Croydon
« on: Thursday 07 August 08 15:19 BST (UK) »
Can somebody help me by finding the birth of Alice Mary Wyatt, please.   ???

We think she was born c.1880 in Croydon, her father was George Wyatt, I have no other

details of him or of her mother.   :-\

Alice married George Ellis 23.4.1898 at St. Thomas's, West Ham.

Thanks for your help.

I see that the 1901 has no birthplace shown for Alice and there are a couple of possibilities on the 1891 with a father George

What was George's occupation on Alice's marriage cert?

Hi Foz.
It seems that the only Alice Wyatt born around 1880 within the Croydon Reg.Dist.,was the one indicated by Carole.

This Alice is fairly easy to trace through the 1881 census, where she was born, and living,at Mitcham(within Croydon Dist.)and her parents were listed on that census as Joseph and Alice,22 & 19,Mitcham & Norwood.

By 1891 this family is still at Mitcham although the mother is now called Harriet.

There was a marriage recorded within Croydon Reg.Dist.(which also contains much of Norwood)as follows.
Joseph WYATT,D1879.V2a,P389.
Harriet GLADWIN also appears on the same page.

On the 1871 census Harriet and Alice Gladwin are sisters and living with their widowed mother Jane at Croydon.

Is it possible that Alice's father was Joseph and not George?

Hi,

Sorry Dave, I don't think the Alice that was living at Mitcham is the correct one.

On her marriage certificate it says Alice Mary Wyatt and George Ellis married 23.4.1898

at St. Thomas's, West Ham.  George was 23 years old and Alice was 18 years old.

At the time George was living at 98, Abbey Rd, and Alice was living at 92, Abbey Rd.

George's father was Edward Ellis and Alice's father was George Wyatt, a meat salesman.

I've looked on the 1891 census and there are two Alice's, one whose father George was

a Cheesmongers assistant, and the other one whose father George was an Upholsterer

& Undertaker.

I just can't seem to work this one out at all !!

There is a George Wyatt, with a 2yo Alice on the 1881 census when George was a "tripe dresser".RG11/341,P3,F90.

This same George is on the 1891 again as a "tripe dresser".

Regretably I am unable to find him on the 1901 census.

Why did you think that Alice was born within Croydon?

Alice is in my daughter-in-laws tree, none of her family know for certain, but they seem to

think
she was born in Croydon - I don't know why.

Hi

I am related to the George Thomas Wyatt who was the Tripedresser with a daughter Alice Amelia Wyatt born 1879 Clerkenwell, they lived in Islington, then moved to Bermondsey (south London) and Southwark.
The family were Butchers selling meat and Tripedressers - shops selling offal, for many generations.
In fact right back to 1547 in Oxfordshire!
He is my Great Grandfather. Alice had a sister Florence Emily Wyatt b.1883 who married George Ellis.

Hope you are still on this site?
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks so much for your message.
Due to family illness I can't check this info out against my tree at the moment,
but will definitely look at it sometime in the next few weeks.
It would be great if this turns out to be the one in my tree!
Which part of Oxfordshire did they come from?

Regards
