did the david and Elizabeth on the 1881 census have a child called James born 1883? If they did, does anyone know anything about him? The reason I ask is because my great grandma's first husband was a james maxwell, and , apart from the info on 1911 census saying he was born Glasgow, he was living in Birmingham at the time, I have no other information.
Where exactly was he in the 1911 census, and what did he say his age was? Does his marriage certificate say his father's name was David?

Hi

He was living in haymills, Birmingham as a border. The marriage was in Leicester and although I don't have the marriage certificate, his fathers name doesn't appear in the parish records on line but his wife's father does. Age was 28 on the census

I have no other information for him

Regards

Jon

You will need to get the marriage certificate to find out his father's name and occupation.

If that is accurate it means that he was born in 1882 or 1883. There are 24 James Maxwells in the Scottish birth records in 1882/1883 so without a father's name you are not going to get anywhere.

Hi

Silly question. If the info isn't on the parish register would it be on the marriage certificate? Especially as wife's fathers name is on there. Can't remember whether the occupations are.

See https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#CertificateInformation.

The names and occupations of both the bride's father and the groom's father are on an English marriage certificate, assuming of course that both bride and groom know the names and occupations of their fathers. If James Maxwell did not know who his father was, obviously he would be unable to give that information to the Registrar.

I see that he married Ellen Hartshorn and that there were two children, Winifred Pearl born 1908 and James Leslie born 11 November 1909, married Nellie Bale in 1932 and died in 1977. It may be that the name Leslie might be a clue.

I see that a James Maxwell, aged 31, died in Billesdon in 1915, and Ellen Maxwell married George Kenn(e)y in Leicester in 1916. Do you know what the cause of his death was?

Have you got Annie Borland Maxwell's 1883 birth certificate? What was the name of her mother?
